It has achieved unprecedented success, with more than one billion total views & plays, and gathering more than 3 million subscribers, making it Pakistan’s largest YouTube success.

Coke Studio Season 11 now welcomes Ali Hamza and Zohaib Kazi as the new show producers. Ali Hamza’s experience in the music industry spans almost 2 decades. He is the founding member of the band Noori. Their debut album created a whirlwind all over the world. A first of its kind, it introduced the genre of pop-rock music to the Pakistani mainstream. In addition the album inspired the youth of Pakistan to take up the responsibility of doing something worthwhile for themselves and others. His most recent achievement, as a maestro of music industry was seen in Coke Studio Season 10, where his original track ‘Tinak Dhin’ received national acclaim and received accolades all across the Pakistani audience. The other producer of Season 11, Zohaib Kazi has been associated with Coke Studio for over 7 years, and was General Manager & Associate Producer for Season 7 till Season 9. In 2017, Zohaib took a hiatus from Coke Studio to reconnect and capture Pakistan’s folk essence through a travelogue styled music album. Season 11 is set to bring forth a new season of live performances with a diverse line up of pop, rock, folk and sufi artists from different genres.

Speaking about Coke Studio’s landmark feat, the General Manager of Coca-Cola Pakistan, Rizwan U. Khan stated, “Music from Coke Studio has become intertwined with Pakistan’s identity, and the influence that Coke Studio has had on the masses in Pakistan is really huge. In the last decade, Coke Studio has committed itself to reintroducing the audience to timeless classics as well as discovering a new generation of musicians. As we welcome the new producers, I want to thank Strings from the bottom of my heart for their passion and commitment towards cementing Coke Studio as a world class asset.”

Strings were able to build strong bridges between the old and the new; and they enriched the more traditional genres like classical, folk and qawaali. In addition, they put forward a list of musicians and helped them to establish themselves as recognized artists. It is also important to highlight that Coke Studio would not have been possible without the unrelenting commitment and hard work of everyone else behind the scenes – the technicians and engineers, the set design and implementation crew, and all the other support staff. Coke Studio’s unparalleled success is due toexcellent team work; with everyone invovled collaborating and working very closely together to create something that is bigger than than anything seen before in the field of music.

#CokeStudio - Coke Studio’s #Tajdar-e-Haram crosses 100 million views on YouTube!

Lahore: The mega hit from Coke Studio’s Season 8, Tajdar-e-Haram has broken all records for Pakistani origin content, by becoming the first song to cross one hundred million views on YouTube. Instantly popular from the first day it was released, the song has come to symbolize the core vision of the iconic music platform Coke Studio and everything that it represents. Besides crossing the 100 million views milestone, Tajdar –e-Haram has received over 5 million engagements and has been viewed in no less than 186 countries across the world.

From the first few chords, Tajdar-e-Haram established itself as an organic melody of a qawwali that has been forever etched in the very soul of the enthusiast of the genre. Atif Aslam softly led one into familiar ambient territory, with the rhythm of the tabla by Babar Ali Khanna and the foreseeable dominance of the tempo provided by Arsalan Rabbani on the harmonium. This ten minute rendition creates an almost hypnotic trance that engulfs listeners through its sheer magnetism.

“Coke Studio continues to break records and over the years it has driven the cultural leadership agenda of Pakistan, celebrating diversity while bridging barriers relevant to the youth of today,” stated Rizwan U. Khan, General Manager, Coca-Cola Pakistan, adding, “and now we are looking forward to Season 11 next year raising the bar even higher.”

Close on the heels of Tajdar-e-Haram is the beautiful song Afreen Afreen, from Coke Studio Season 9 which has so far got 99 million views and is all set to achieve the 100 million views milestone also soon.

Coke Studio directly fuels music conversations through iconic storytelling and successful fusions of musical conventions; mixing old and new artists, and traditional and modern sounds. It is about juxtaposed music styles from diversified artists and times in Pakistan’s musical history. As Coke Studio continues on its journey, it owes a debt to Strings, the executive producers for Seasons 6 to 10, whose contribution to the growth of Pakistan’s most iconic music platform was significant, strengthening further the foundation for the future journey of Coke Studio.

Coke Studio’s rendition of ‘Us Rah Par’ is composed by Jaffer Zaidi who shares, “When we were recording the song, we could tell there was something missing. I wanted Strings to perform on the song and they agreed! I feel like it’s an important contribution because they knew Junaid Jamshed and Vital Signs personally and spent time with them. They bring a certain value to the song that I can’t describe. I’m very happy with the song.”

Coke Studio 10’s Episode 5 showcases the breadth of Pakistan’s talent

Coke Studio 10’s Episode 5 showcases the breadth of Pakistan’s talent

Karachi:- Coke Studio 10 will release its fifth installment packed with exceptional music this weekend. Featuring four songs, Episode 5 will include ‘Bol’ by Shafqat Amanat Ali as a tribute to the iconic poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz; ‘Rangrez’ by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Sahir Ali Bagga; ‘Sab Maya Hai’ by the father son duo, Attaullah Esakhelvi and Sanwal Esakhelvi; and ‘Ujaalon Mein’ by Faraz Anwer and Faiza Mujahid. The Episode is set to be released digitally on Friday, September 8 and aired on all leading television channels on Saturday, September 9.

Often called Pakistan’s "greatest poet", Faiz Ahmed Faiz was an intellectual, a revolutionary poet, and one of the most celebrated writers of the Urdu language. Faiz’s poetry was influenced by the works of Allama Iqbal and Mirza Ghalib, and addressed the tyranny of military dictatorships and oppressions. Coke Studio’s rendition of the iconic poem ‘Bol’, advocating the importance of standing up and speaking the truth, is brought to life in a sweet ballad performed by Shafqat Amanat Ali Khan.

Shafqat Amanat Ali began his journey with Coke Studio in Season 2 with ‘Aankhon Ke Sagar, ‘Khamaj’, ‘Ajab Khail’, and an interesting collaboration with Josh on their bhangra track, ‘Mahi Ve’. He returns to Coke Studio in Season 10 with his signature, dynamic voice demonstrating his versatility as a true musician. He observed, “Coke Studio has played a big part in promoting Pakistani music globally. They’ve managed to bring our forte and our specialty to attention; these are the sounds that make Pakistani music different.”

The tribute is directed by the talented Shani Arshad who returns to Coke Studio Season 10 after his powerful compositions like Abida Parveen’s ‘Maula-e-Kul’ and Meesha Shafi’s ‘Bholay Bhalay’ in Season 9.

‘Rangrez’, a modern Sufi song, encompasses the true meaning of devotional love. Rahat Fateh Ali Khan teams up with Sahir Ali Bagga to create magic with a fresh, new sound. In the musical composition by Sahir Ali Bagga, the tabla flirts with the shehnai and a flurry of backing vocals paint a vibrant surrounding as Rahat Fateh Ali Khan’s glowing and scintillating voice takes the foreground to bring out the rang and dhanak of the melody.

Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, the modern torch-bearer of Qawwali, has been an integral part of Coke Studio from the very beginning, with his mesmerizing take of Ali Azmat’s Garaj Baras in Season 1, to his powerful rendition of Chaap Tilaak with Abida Parveen in Season 8. After a record-breaking, ‘Afreen, Afreen’ and finally, an enigmatic duet with the (Late) Amjad Sabri in Season 9, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan returns to Coke Studio 10 with some of the most sought after performances of the year. He shares, “Coke Studio has been very successful, and it’s all because of the music directors, music selection, the musicians and the overall talent in Pakistan. They have the credit of bringing the talent of the country to a global platform. The world now accepts and appreciates Pakistan’s musical talent. I think this is just the beginning, and Coke Studio has a long way to go.”

In ‘Sab Maya Hai’, Attaullah Esakhelvi and Sanwal Esakhelvi bring the sounds of the soil to the airwaves by narrating a tale of depravity within the realms of love and money. Attaullah Esakhelvi’s unique yet familiar folk tone settle itself into the soundscapes that Shuja Haider has designed as Sanwal’s young, powerful voice lifts the melody with his energy. On a backdrop of groovy and emotive backing vocals, accented with the banjo and flute, this song is a journey towards uncovering the truth.
Sanwal enthused, “I have been performing with my father for a long time, so on some level, it’s not too new for me, but yes, there is an excitement because it’s the first time we are together on Coke Studio. I was a little nervous but I enjoyed working with Shuja and am excited about my performance.”

Well versed in traditional and folk music, Sanwal will be making his Coke Studio debut alongside his father Attaullah Esakhelvi in a beautiful rendition of a family classic. Attaullah sahab previously lent his voice to Coke Studio in Season 4 with popular renditions of ‘Pyaar Naal’ and ‘Ni Oothaan Waale’.

A familiar rock-ballad ‘Ujaalon Mein’, finds a home at Coke Studio Season 10, as Faiza Mujahid’s electrifying voice is paired with the prolific guitarist, Faraz Anwar, in a delightful rendition of Pakistan rock anthem. Jaffer Zaidi masterfully creates a space that complements and accentuates the simplicity of the melody while staying true to the signature progressive-rock sound that comes with Faraz Anwar’s fiery musical personality to create a powerful rendition of a classic Pakistani rock song.

Faiza admitted, “I was really happy that I got to work with Faraz and Jaffer. Coke Studio covers so many genres but I wanted to stick to my genre and performing with Faraz on his song has been amazing. The song is soft rock and what I loved about the collaboration was that it was an equal participation. The song is beautiful, and I think everyone will like it.” Singer-songwriter, Faiza Mujahid rose to fame with the famous song ‘Bandeya Ho’ from the movie ‘Khuda Kay Liye’. She makes her Coke Studio debut on Season 10 with her flair for rock music and versatile vocals.

With an already large fan following, Faraz Anwar made his Coke Studio debut with band Mizraab in Season 4. He returned in Season 7 as a guitarist in collaboration with Sajjad Ali. Faraz Anwer joins the Coke Studio team in Season 10 to unearth some progressive rock ballads that stir the soul.

The milestone Season 10 continues Coke Studio’s tradition of producing exceptional music and bringing together Pakistan’s most accomplished artists and musicians on one platform. With an interesting assortment of the renowned and established artists along with the new and rising stars, Episode 5 is all set to yet again captivate audiences though its soulful music.

Episode 4 of Coke Studio 10 Songs

Episode 4 of Coke Studio 10 Songs

Jindjaani
Produced & Directed by Strings
Music Directed by Ali Hamza
‘Jindjaani’, composition & lyrics by Ali Hamza
‘Jhanjar Phabdina’, originally composed by Wazir Afzal & lyrics by Baba Alamsiyah Posh

A bittersweet contemporary folk number, Jindjaani ventures into the rough yet rewarding terrain of love. Ali Hamza’s signature vocals take the mic alongside Nirmal Roy’s infectiously sweet energy to create a magical duet. Starting off on a note of heartbreak and dismay, a solid, traditional dholak and mandolin steer the song towards some sonic closure as it blends into the classic folk song, Jhanjar Phabdina. Bringing the sounds of the soil to the forefront, Ali Hamza’s reflects deeply on his musical roots to create a soundscape that is fresh and familiar at the same time.

Julie
Produced & Directed by Strings
Music Directed by Shani Arshad
Lyrics & Composition by Ali Zafar

A playful, modern tune, Julie is a bright take on heartbreak. Ali Zafar pulls out all the stops for this unrestrained ditty that has a pop-blues twist. He stars as a petulant lover agonizing over the tragedy of love lost. Shani Arshad masterfully showcases the complexity of the sentiment with his instrumentation; he brings forth the flares of a mournful shehnai to cut through an otherwise lively arrangement and the power of Danyal Zafar’s guitar solo bring out the fiery nature of the song. Written, composed and performed by Ali Zafar, the musician proves that he can’t help but push the envelope.

Latthay Di Chaadar
Produced & Directed by Strings
Music Directed by Shani Arshad
Latthay Di Chaadar, originally composed by Khalil Ahmed & lyrics by Bashir Manzar
Dekh Tera, originally composed by Niaz Ahmed & lyrics by Muhammad Nasir

Colors seem more vivid in this song as a traditional South Asian wedding song blends with an 80s pop track in Shani Arshad’s latest concoction. An upbeat track nuanced with the rhythm of dandiyaan and a gliding flute, the song is further embellished by the fact that it is a duet. Farhan Saeed’s warm, tuneful take on ‘Dekh Tera’ paired with Quratulain Balouch’s textured, radiant voice belting out Latthay Di Chaadar makes for the perfect mixture. With a strong backing vocals section, the song finds itself exploring the musical spectrum of our vibrant traditional past.

Naina Moray
Produced & Directed by Strings
Music Directed by Jaffer Zaidi

A dark storm of emotions, this thumri is fueled by the thunderous arrangement of Jaffer Zaidi. Honing in on the pain and anguish that comes with the void of heartbreak, the incredibly powerful and skillful duo of Javed Bashir & Akbar Ali cascade through the contours and complexities of Raag Bhairvi. The hues of the raag are further evoked through a confluence of the ethereal drone of the sarangi and a prolific guitar solo by Amir Zaki, exuding a sense of melancholy. Playing with the fluidity of the raag, the track is a masterful excursion that resonates with the profundity of sorrow.

Often referred to as the 'Tansen' of the 20th century, Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan was one of the greatest classical vocalists of the sub-continent hailing from the Patiala Gharana. Paying an ode to the musical icon, Javed Bashir and Akbar Ali will perform a classic thumri ‘Naina Moray’ composed by the illustrious Bade Ghulam Ali himself.

‘Naina Moray’ also features the prolific guitarist and musician Amir Zaki, in what has unwittingly turned out to be his last performance. Amir Zaki, an ace guitarist was one of the most inspiring musicians of our country and performed alongside many renowned artists of Pakistan. A teacher and mentor to many, Amir Zaki left a void that is perhaps impossible to fill when he died of heart failure shortly after the recording of the song.

Amir Zaki debuted in Season 7 of Coke Studio as a guest musician playing stellar, masterful solos on tracks with Asrar and Zohaib Hasan. Season 10 will bid farewell to one of the most celebrated artists of our time in his final performance in Episode 4.

Javed Bashir made his debut on Coke Studio in Season 2, returning in Season 7 and again in Season 9 to prove his genius and gave us some magical renditions and incredible partnerships. In Season 10, Javed Bashir brings his bold voice with a dark, brooding take on a classic. Hailing from the Jalandhar Nalan Gharana, Akbar Ali uses his training and innate musicality on the sets of Coke Studio in his debut season.

Singer and actor, Farhan Saeed returns to Coke Studio Season 10 after his highly praised performance of ‘Panchi’ on Season 4 with Jal. Farhan remarked “People all over the world love Coke Studio and it’s good to be a part of the show, working with some of Pakistan’s greatest artists. The most amazing thing about Coke Studio is the image of Pakistan being represented in the world.”

Talking about his duet with Quratulain Balouch, Farhan shared “Last time I was on sets of Coke Studio with Jal, performing as a band but this time I’m doing it alone and it’s a great feeling. We’re doing a popular folk song ‘Latthay Di Chaadar’ and this type of music is something new for me. I’m excited about my performance and hopefully the audiences will appreciate it.”

Sibling duo Ali Zafar and Danyal Zafar will come together for the song ‘Julie’. Ali Zafar affirms “I’m really proud of Danyal, he’s a talented musician and I think he has a lot more to offer.” Ali Zafar has been closely tied to Coke Studio since Season 1 with his renditions of Chal Dil Meray, Channo and Rangeen. From a powerful collaboration with Tufail Ahmed for the song ‘Allah Hu’ to adorning a sparkly jacket for Season 8’s ‘Rockstar’, Ali Zafar has never failed to entertain. He asserts “It always feels great to be on the sets of Coke Studio. The song ‘Julie’ is a combination of Pushto and western ballad song, and is an inventive mix of the two genres. I enjoyed performing it, and am anticipating positive reactions.”

Ali Hamza and Nirmal Roy pair up for the song ‘Jindjaani’. Singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, Ali Hamza is a veteran Coke Studio artist, appearing both as a featured artist and guest musician in prior seasons. Having previously taken on the role as part of Noori, Ali Hamza makes his solo debut in Coke Studio Season 10 as a music director. He comes into stride by tapping into his personal musical sensibilities and creating a collaborative, innovative environment to brew some fantastic music packed with energy. After her debut performance in Season 9’s multi-lingual ‘Ala Bali’ with Jabar Abbas which put Nirmal Roy on the map, she returns to Coke Studio 10 with her great diction and perfectly pitched harmonies to perform alongside Ali Hamza.

Coke Studio Season 10 has enchanted audiences with its music featured in the last 3 episodes. The milestone 10th season is already breaking barriers and reaching more audiences than ever before. Music from Coke Studio has become intertwined with Pakistan’s identity and the influence that Coke Studio has had on the local music industry is incomparable.

He remarked “Coke studio is a big platform for music in Pakistan and is well recognized not only in the country but also all over the world. Coke studio has become intertwined with Pakistan’s identity and it truly has become the Sound of the Nation. I have always admired the platform, and it was a dream to be part of the team. So I’m excited to finally be a part of Coke Studio, especially in the milestone Season 10. It’s been a very good experience for me to be a part of this phenomenon that is Coke Studio.”

Sahir Ali Bagga brings his keen ear and virtuosity with him to breathe life into his energetic melody as he collaborates with Aima Baig for ‘Baazi’ a playful, traditional folk song. The young Aima Baig, a fresh voice on Coke Studio brings to the table her strong, sultry and versatile vocals. ‘Baazi’ is a Siraiki classic, with Sahir Ali Bagga adding his own poetry to the original lyrics. The upbeat folk-song is set aflame by riveting vocals of Sahir Ali Bagga and Aima Baig. Complete with a grooving bass and a truly ethnic percussive section, Sahir Ali Bagga’s music direction brings the song into a delightfully high-spirited terrain that is an attempt to embody the true sounds of the soil.

Musical mastermind, Sajjad Ali makes a stunning directorial debut on Coke Studio with his poignant rendition of ‘Ronay Na Diya’. The reproachful lament conveys the overwhelming emotions of remorse and despair with musical inlays of a sorrowful clarinet and wistful vocals. Sajjad Ali’s classic, celebrated vocals find an interesting match asZaw Ali brings a wild brew of vibrant R&B vocal runs alongside her delicate but powerful classical chops. Film-maker and musician, Zaw Ali, is collaborating with Sajjad Ali for her musical debut in Coke Studio Season 10.

Mekaal Hasan debuts as a music director on Coke Studio taking on a classic ghazal ‘Mujh Se Pehli Si Muhabbat’ written by Faiz Ahmed Faiz and originally performed by Madam Noor Jehan. Unleashing his signature sound, Mekaal Hasan creates a carefully constructed soundscape fitting for the themes of rapture and cruelty that Faiz touches upon in his poetry. The silvery vocals of Humera Channa paired with the honeyed tones of Nabeel Shaukat’s voice make for a fantastic combination to take on this humble tribute to the unmatched Noor Jehan.

After making her debut on Coke Studio Season 7, Humera Channa returns to Coke Studio to share more of her exquisite voice in Season 10. With his soul-stirring performance of ‘Bewaja’ coupled with his duet with Ali Sethi on ‘UmranLagiyaan’ in Season 8, Nabeel Shaukat returns to Coke Studio Season 10 set to steal hearts again with his heart-warming voice.

Abbas Arslan, Director Marketing of Coca-Cola Pakistan, sharing his views on 10 years milestone achieved by Coke Studio said, “The evolution of Coke Studio as a platform has been remarkable since its inception. We always try creating an authentic connect between the youth, their culture and heritage and we are proud of the fact that ten years down the line, the platform has not only been able to achieve worldwide acclaim by bridging age, geographic and language barriers, and successfully transcribing itself into a global phenomenon, but has also managed to sustain, getting bigger and better each year.”

Strings, the executive producers of Coke Studio since its seventh season, talking about this rendition of the National Anthem stated, “By bringing together some of the biggest names in Pakistan’s music industry to sing our revered National Anthem, we hope to rekindle the spirit of patriotism and social consciousness in the heart of every Pakistani. This is more significant now than ever, as we are marking seventy years of our independence.”

The music for Coke Studio’s rendition of the national anthem has been produced by Strings and different instruments were used in the recording. Each participating singer and musician got deeply emotionally involved during the production, coming together as one force for this special production of the national anthem.

#CokeStudio 9 ends with #AmjadSabri - Rahat Fateh Ali performing ‘Rang’

#CokeStudio 9 ends with #AmjadSabri - Rahat Fateh Ali performing ‘Rang’

The wait is almost over for the last episode of Coke Studio as season 9 comes to an end. This season was an exciting mix of some successful and failed experiments and collaborations. In this finale, Coke Studio will share the world renowned Qawwal Amjad Sabri’s final studio recording in collaboration with the magnificent Rahat Fateh Ali Khan.

Late Amjad Sabri will be seen performing in Coke Studio 9 with another maestro Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. The two legends have recorded the Kalaam of Amir Khusro ‘Aaj Rang Hai Imaan’, which has been directed by Shani Arshad and produced by Strings.

The two qawwal families return to the platform for the first time since 1970s when Ghulam Farid Sabri and Ustaad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan performed the ‘Rang’ together. Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Amjad Sabri have collaborated again to perform the very track, four decades later.

This year, the great Amjad Sabri himself hit the floor to mark his debut in Coke Studio 9 but who knew that the legendary Qawwal won’t make to see it on television.

“About 40 years ago, my father and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan read this Kalaam at a dargah in Karachi and 40 years later, Rahat and I are reading it again,” told Sabri while he was recording Coke Studio a month before his death, the local media reported.

While, Coke Studio has been producing innumerable mesmerizing songs over the last eight seasons, the second episode of the ninth season, featuring singers Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Momina Mustehsan, recreating legend Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s ‘Afreen Afreen’, has stolen many a heart.

Coke Studio is a Pakistani music television series which features live studio-recorded music performances by various artists. (Web Desk)
