Huawei founder says that the world relies on open collaboration for shared success

Huawei founder says that the world relies on open collaboration for shared success

Karachi, June 19, 2019: Ren Zhengfei, founder and CEO of Huawei, was recently part of an open dialogue alongside other prominent guests examining the latest economic and political headwinds affecting the global ICT industry and Huawei in particular. The business leader stressed that the world ultimately relies on open collaboration for shared success.

Speaking to a select group of international press, the discussion was attended by Ren Zhengfei as well as Nicholas Negroponte, a tech visionary and co-founder of the MIT Media Lab; George Gilder, one of President Ronald Reagan’s most quoted authors and a venture capitalist in the United States; and Catherine Chen, Senior Vice President and Director of the Board of Huawei. Addressing how Huawei will engage American companies who wish to keep supplying it with products, Zhengfei commented: “All of the US companies that we work with are great companies that hold themselves to high standards in terms of business integrity and ethics. The current setbacks we are facing are not caused by those American companies, but by politicians who see things differently from the way we see them. We didn’t expect such extreme measures, but we did make some preparations.”

In the coming years, Zhengfei acknowledged that production capacity may decrease. In 2019 and 2020, the company’s annual sales revenue will be about USD$100 billion, according to Zhengfei. But around 2021, he believes Huawei we will regain its growth momentum and provide even better services to society.
“When this step is finished, we’ll become stronger.” Responding to questions about the US/China relationship and being seen together with Huawei, Gilder contested: “I think that I am contributing to saving the United States from the terrible mistake that it’s currently making, epitomized by the outrageous bans and tariffs, as well as restrictions it is placing on Huawei. But also, I can contribute to a re-construction of Internet architecture to address the terrible security collapse across the Internet that is making everybody paranoid and preventing everybody from trusting anybody else. This is really a technical problem that Huawei can address, and not a political problem.”

Building on that point, Negroponte added: “We agree on the fact that the United States is making a terrible mistake, first of all, picking on a company. I come from a world where what we value isn’t so much about trade, commerce, and stock values. We value knowledge, and we want to build on the people before, and the only way this works is if people are open at the beginning.” Recognizing that Huawei’s collaboration with a number of American universities and labs has been halted, Zhengfei responded that China is very strong in engineering inventions, and that the company invests heavily in R and D with more than 80,000 engineers. The company now supports more than 300 universities and 900 research institutes around the world.

When asked about whether cyber security is really behind the current confrontation with Huawei, Negroponte argued: “Our President has already said publicly that he would reconsider Huawei if we can make a trade deal. So, clearly, it’s not about national security. We don’t trade national security. It’s about something else. And this trade war has got to end, and that, I believe, will end sooner rather than later. We need to separate the issues of cyber security and information security,” added Zhengfei. “Cyber security relates to the networks connecting our society. We can’t ever allow these networks to break down or malfunction, and this is a security issue.”

Huawei Climbs In BrandZ Rankings Of The World’s Most Valuable Brands

Ground-breaking Product Innovations, Device Sales and a commitment to Developing Technology that benefits society are keys to success

Huawei has strengthened its position in a leading global brand index while also increasing its brand value. BrandZ’s annual Top 100 Most Valuable Global Brands study, published by WPP’s research arm Kantar, ranks Huawei 47th (up one place from last year) with an eight percent increase in brand value. It’s the fourth consecutive year that Huawei has been featured in the top 50.

Ground-breaking product innovations such as the HUAWEI P30Pro’s advanced camera system and the unprecedented technological innovation baked into the HUAWEI Mate X handset (which boasts advanced 5G capabilities and a new foldable design) have clearly struck a chord with media and consumers alike, gaining excellent product reviews and countless awards, success that been reflected in sales.

As leading analyst firm IDC noted in its most recent Worldwide Mobile Device Tracker, Huawei provided the only highlight from a vendor perspective, posting year-on-year growth in shipments of more than 50%. It further remarked that the firm’s laser focus on growing its stature in the world of mobile devices saw it closing the gap on leader Samsung and firmly cementing its number two position.

According to IDC, Huawei now boasts 19% of global market share in the smartphone category and was the only smart phone vendor at the top of the rankings to experience an increase in shipment volumes throughout the first quarter of 2019.

Huawei’s success shines a light on a broader trend of Chinese brands succeeding in the global consumer economy. Four of the nine new entries to the BrandZ’s report are based in China and there are 15 Chinese companies now in the top 100.

Overall, there was a 7% increase from USD 4.4 to 4.7 trillion over last year’s report, adding a total of USD 328 billion to the brands listed in the report. For the 13th year, consumer technology companies continue to dominate the top rankings occupying eight out of the ten places with a combined worth in excess of USD1 trillion.

Looking to the future, Huawei’s commitment to developing technologies that benefit society, as well as consumers, is sure to boost its reputation and standing among global audiences.

For example,Huawei’s ‘AI for Good’initiative brings to life how Artificial Intelligence can be a transformative technology when applied to helping humanity overcome challenges and improve life chances.Recent projects include translating books into sign language for deaf children, reading facial expressions for the blind and diagnosing visual impairments at a stage early enough for effective treatment.

Three Reasons You Shouldn’t Worry About Being a Huawei Device User

Three Reasons You Shouldn’t Worry About Being a Huawei Device User

There has been a lot of speculations and news regarding Huawei and the US Government over the past couple of days. Much like any other hot topic, it comes with a fair amount of assumptions, misinformation and miscommunication. Huawei has risen to being the second largest smartphone maker in the world which is also the spot it enjoys in Pakistan currently. If you are a Huawei device user, these are the reasons you might want to know and feel good about.

Customers need not worry about their Huawei devices

For the convenience of everyone, after intensive research, we have collected statements available to the public online and put together a quick guide on some of the concerns, questions and misconceptions customers have regarding their Huawei devices.

Your Huawei device will not stop working

There has been a lot of confusion amongst owners of Huawei phones that their phones will stop working however that is simply not true. Your phone will continue to operate just like it normally does like any other phone. It will also continue to be serviced by Huawei. In a public statement, the company mentioned:

“Huawei will continue to provide security updates and after-sales services to all existing Huawei and Honor smartphone and tablet products, covering those that have been sold and that are still in stock globally.”

Your phone will receive its usual updates

The good news is that all phones that have been released by Huawei, be it purchased or in store will continue to receive security updates for Android and regular Google app updates from the Google Play Store. Here is Google’s statement:

“We are complying with the order and reviewing the implications. For users of our services, Google Play and the security protections from Google Play Protect will continue to function on existing Huawei devices,” a spokesperson told us.

So there you have it. As Google’s official statement suggests, Huawei’s current devices will have complete access to the Play Store and get security updates from Android.

Huawei is one of the biggest Android partners and a gigantic company

When you purchase a Huawei product, you must know you are buying from one of the largest Android partners with the most innovative technology. Huawei promises to continue providing support for all its devices for the whole lifetime of that phone.

It’s also worth noticing Huawei stops at nothing with plans for launching new phones. The Honor 20 was recently launched globally while a new Y series phone from Huawei is also all set for a release soon. This means that Huawei is confident in its products and willing to support the end-user whatever the outcome of the current issue at hand be.

Huawei to Invest 35 million Euros in Paris OpenLab

Huawei to Invest 35 million Euros in Paris OpenLab

Huawei to Invest 35 million Euros in Paris OpenLab

[Paris, France, May 16, 2019] Huawei said it will invest 35 million Euros in its Paris OpenLab over five years. Speaking at the VivaTech Conference in Paris, Huawei Deputy Chairman Ken Hu said the investment showed confidence that France was on the way to become a global innovation hub.

VivaTech, an annual technology conference held in Paris, runs from May 16 – 18 and this year is bringing together 100,000 representatives of the worlds of business, politics and academia from 125 countries and regions.

In a keynote speech titled "Our Shared Ambition", Hu shared how converging digital technologies are bringing revolutionary change, and highlighted that openness and collaboration is the only way to drive innovation forward. Hu announced that Huawei will invest 35 million euros into its OpenLab in France over the next five years, and will work together with customers and partners to build a stronger digital ecosystem in the country.

Huawei Deputy Chairman Ken Hu Speaking at VivaTech

"This is the best time for innovation," Hu said. "Here in France, you've got world-leading basic research, so many talented people, and an innovation-friendly environment. France is in a great position to be a global hub for innovation. Huawei has been here for 17 years, and we are so proud to be part of this ambition."

Technologies like 5G, cloud, and AI are the main drivers of innovation, accelerating digital transformation across all industries. By 2025, there will be 100 billion connections around the world, all companies will use cloud, and 77% of cloud applications will be powered by AI. Hu remarked, "When these technologies are combined, there will be fundamental changes to all industries. These technologies will also reshape everything we are familiar with today," Hu explained.

According to Hu, mobile phones will reshape our personal digital experience. As personal computing centers, mobile phones will integrate more naturally with devices like tablets, PCs, TVs, and cars to form a more user-centric ecosystem, which will provide a seamless and more intuitive digital experience.

Smart cars will become mobile super computers and data centers, rather than just a means of transportation. Each car will have tens of millions of lines of code and terabytes of computing power. Software, hardware, and applications in cars will be able to be upgraded anytime, anywhere to completely refresh the user experience. Carmakers must to consider how to meet these evolving needs and create new value for their customers.

"It doesn't matter if you are a startup or an established business, you need to figure out how to maximize the potential of digital technologies and seize the opportunity to innovate," Hu added.

Hu went on to encourage cross-industry collaboration as the key to seizing new opportunities. “When it comes to innovation,” he said, "organizations need to do what they do best, and collaborate on the rest."

To this end, Huawei opened its Paris OpenLab in April 2018, providing a platform for experts from different industries to identify their future needs in digital transformation and to develop industry-specific solutions. In just one year, 50 partners worked on 15 industry solutions covering retail, manufacturing, and smart cities. Over the next five years, Huawei’s investment of 35 million Euros in its OpenLab in France will make it a stronger platform for cross-industry collaboration.

At this year's VivaTech, Huawei has set up an exhibition area of 390 square meters to demonstrate innovative solutions in 5G, cloud, smart retailing, and connected cars. In addition, Huawei has worked with 32 French startups to demonstrate innovative solutions and success stories for smart cities, smart transportation, environmental protection, AI, and IoT.

According to our source from China who told HuaweiCentral, Huawei has developed its own operating system under the name “Hongmeng”, that was in active development since 2012.

The source has also told that the company was using this operating system in its mobile phones potentially hidden behind the curtain.

Although, the source didn’t confirm that this will be the original name of the OS or it’s only a codename but did confirm the existence of the operating system related to this word.

Currently, Huawei is yet to comment on this report but the company has already expected recent Google Android support suspension way before in the past as it was developing a substitute for Android operating system.

On Sunday, a report revealed that Google has pulled its Android OS software support from Huawei devices, leaving Huawei’s consumers concerned about what’ll happen to their smartphones after this crisis, which is a subsequent action from Google following Trump’s blacklisting of Huawei.

Huawei CFO house arrest contrasts with Canadians detained in China

Huawei CFO house arrest contrasts with Canadians detained in China

Huawei CFO house arrest contrasts with Canadians detained in China

By Tyler Choi

TORONTO, May 20 (Reuters) - Huawei Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou described her house arrest in Vancouver as "restricted to a limited space" even as she spent her past six months in a six-bedroom, multi-million dollar Canadian home.

Meng, 47, has access to top lawyers, moves around relatively freely in Vancouver, albeit with restrictions, and her comments drew immediate comparison between her life in house arrest versus the two Canadians detained in solitary confinement in China for a similar length of time.

Daughter of Huawei Technologies Co Ltd's billionaire founder, Ren Zhengfei, Meng was arrested at Vancouver's airport in December on a U.S. warrant and is fighting extradition on charges that she conspired to defraud global banks about Huawei's relationship with a company operating in Iran.

Businessman Michael Spavor, who worked with North Korea, and former diplomat Michael Kovrig were picked up separately in December, shortly after Canada arrested Meng. Both were formally arrested earlier this month on state secret charges but it was unclear if they have been moved to another facility where they might get better treatment.

"The difference between the terms of detention of Madame Meng and the two Canadians is going to just jump off the page," said Paul Evans, a professor at the University of British Columbia who specializes in China and Canada relations.

He added that the contrast could anger Canadians who compare Meng's conditions with those of Kovrig and Spavor.

The two Canadians have no access to lawyers or bail, are questioned every morning, afternoon and evening, and are held in a room where the lights are not allowed to be turned off at night, according to Canadian diplomats. China has said only that the legal rights of the two men are being fully guaranteed.

BIGGER MANSION

Meanwhile, Meng lived in her C$5.6 million ($4.2 million) home in Vancouver, which has six bedrooms and five bathrooms, after posting a C$10 million bail in December.

"Despite being physically restricted to a very limited space during my time in Vancouver, my inner self has never felt so colorful and vast," Meng wrote in the letter published last Monday on the Xinsheng Community, an internal forum for the 188,000 Huawei employees.

She praised employees for their concern and said there were employees "staying up all night just to follow my case in distant time zones."

Earlier this month, a judge in the British Columbia Supreme Court granted Meng's request to shift to a bigger, C$13.3 million house, in one of Canada's most exclusive neighborhoods. Meng's lawyers said in the court filing that the house would be ready by May 11 after renovation work, but it was not immediately clear if Meng has already moved in.

"From a tony to a tonier neighborhood," Evans said.

Meng arrived for the last hearing in a Chevy sports utility vehicle wearing an elegant full-length black and gray weave-pattern dress.

But in the case of the two Canadians, it was not even clear where they have been held. The diplomats who have met them were taken to a police station and allowed to meet them there, rather than being taken to the actual location of their detention.

Luxmore Realty details Meng's new Matthews Street residence as an 8,170 square feet home with seven bedrooms and eight bathrooms. Meng's bigger mansion is fully fenced, which improves security, Scot Filer CEO of Lions Gate, the security company for Meng, said in a court filing.

The house features "controlled access for pedestrians and vehicles" and has clear distinction between public space and private space, which Filer cites as the reasons for moving Meng to the new house, which is close to the Chinese embassy.

China's courts are tightly controlled by the Communist Party and serve its political aims. Under Chinese laws, suspects of crimes such as Kovrig and Spavor are accused of can be held basically incommunicado without charges for six months and it can be more than a year after charges are brought that the case goes to court.

Huawei is a risk so Britain must change course on 5G, ex-MI6 spymaster says

LONDON (Reuters) - China’s Huawei poses such a grave security risk to the United Kingdom that the government must reconsider its decision to give it a limited role in building 5G networks, a former head of Britain’s MI6 foreign spy service said on Thursday.

In what some have compared to the Cold War arms race, the United States is worried that 5G dominance would give any global competitor such as China an advantage Washington is not ready to accept.

The Trump administration, which hit Huawei with severe sanctions on Wednesday, has told allies not to use its technology because of fears it could be a vehicle for Chinese spying. Huawei has repeatedly denied this.

But British ministers have agreed to allow Huawei a restricted role in building parts of its 5G network. The final decision has not yet been published.

“I very much hope there is time for the UK government, and the probability as I write of a new prime minister, to reconsider the Huawei decision,” said Richard Dearlove, who was chief of the Secret Intelligence Service from 1996 to 2004.

“The ability to control communications and the data that flows through its channels will be the route to exercise power over societies and other nations,” Dearlove wrote in the foreword to a report on Huawei by the Henry Jackson Society.

Huawei, founded in 1987 by a former engineer in China’s People’s Liberation Army, denies it is spying for Beijing, says it complies with the law and that the United States is trying to smear it because Western companies are falling behind.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told Britain on a visit this month that it needed to change its attitude towards China and Huawei, casting the world’s second largest economy as a threat to the West similar to that once posed by the Soviet Union.

Dearlove, who spent 38 years in British intelligence, said it was deeply worrying that the British government “appears to have decided to place the development of some its most sensitive critical infrastructure” in the hands of a Chinese company.

“No part of the Communist Chinese state is ultimately able to operate free of the control exercised by its Communist Party leadership,” said Dearlove.

“We should also not be influenced by the threat of the economic cost of either delaying 5G or having to settle for a less capable and more expensive provider,” he said.

Huawei unveils new AI chips amid Chinese technology ambitions

Huawei unveils new AI chips amid Chinese technology ambitions

SHANGHAI: China’s Huawei Technologies Co Ltd, the world’s largest telecom-equipment maker, unveiled an AI chip on Wednesday that will power its servers, in a push to boost its nascent cloud-computing business.

China wants locally made chips inside 40 percent of all smartphones in the domestic market by 2025 and is betting billions of dollars on homegrown champions to get there.

Huawei set up its cloud business unit last year and is now trying to gain a firmer foothold in the domestic public cloud market, currently dominated by Alibaba. While the unit accounts for a small part of Huawei’s overall sales, it has flagged the business as a potential growth driver.

The new 7 nanometre Ascend 910 chipset that Huawei unveiled at its annual global partners’ conference will service this unit and is meant for data centres that crunch mountains of data.

The chip will process data much faster than rival products, Huawei’s rotating chairman, Eric Xu, said, adding it was twice as powerful as its nearest competitor Nvidia’s v100.

Huawei also unveiled another chip that can be used to power surveillance cameras. It expects the Ascend 310 to help make AI cheaper for hardware firms by allowing them to buy readymade modules to fit their own products.

The Ascend 910 will be available from the second quarter of 2019 and the 310 is already on shelves.

Huawei said it will not sell these chipsets separately to customers, but its efforts would still pit it against big US vendors such as Qualcomm, AMD and Nvidia.

Huawei, however, does not expect any “direct competition” with other vendors as it will not sell to third parties, Xu said at the Huawei Connect conference.

Huawei already makes its own processor for its high-end phones but has so far mainly used Intel and Nvidia chips in its servers. The company is the world’s second-largest smartphone maker by volume.

The company will use a mix of its chips and those from other vendors in its servers to cater to various price points, said Qiu Heng, marketing president for Huawei’s enterprise business.

It was not clear how much of Intel or Nvidia components would be replaced.

Huawei’s push to grow its domestic business comes in the backdrop of growing fears that Western consumers could become reluctant to buy Chinese tech goods due to concerns about security risks and allegations of spying by Beijing.

Bloomberg reported last week that some 30 US companies’ systems had been infiltrated by malicious chips inserted by Chinese intelligence agents.

Huawei has long been barred from selling telecom gear in the United States. In August, it was also banned by Australia from supplying equipment for the country’s planned 5G mobile network.—Reuters
