PEACE, Cybernet Pakistan sign agreement - Pakistan’s internet capacity to be increased by 96 Tb / s

KARACHI/CAIRO: A Cable Landing Party Agreement has been signed between PEACE Cable International Network Co., Ltd (PEACE Cable) and Cyber Internet Services Pvt Ltd (Cybernet Pakistan). This landmark agreement, signed on 16 April 2019 at Capacity North Africa in Cairo, follows a Memorandum of Understanding signed by both parties in 2018.

Pakistan & East Africa Connecting Europe (PEACE) is 12,000 km long, privately owned cable system that provides an open, flexible and carrier-neutral services for its customers. PEACE is targeted for completion in Q1, 2020.The system design will adopt the latest 200G technology and WSS technology, which provides the capability to transmit over 16 Tb/s per fibre pair, servicing growing regional capacity needs. The PEACE cable system with landings in Pakistan, Djibouti, Egypt, Kenya and France — in the first phase

— will connect the three most populated continents in the world, providing critical interconnection to the economic corridors of Asia, Europe, and Africa. A total capacity of 96 Tb/s will be added to Pakistan’s internet infrastructure.

Cybernet, amongst Pakistan’s oldest ISPs, is the PEACE Cable Landing
Station Partner in Pakistan and will be deploying PEACE Pakistan Cable Landing Station (CLS) and managing its operations. With over 22 years of experience in building and running countrywide fiber broadband operations, IP/ MPLS networks and cloud-optimized data centres, Cybernet will be building Pakistan’s first carrier-neutral cable landing station for PEACE cable by Q1, 2020 in Karachi. The design and selection of the CLS site in Karachi is in line

with Cybernet’s objectives to bring carrier neutrality and much needed redundancy to Pakistan’s internet backbone. Cybernet will provide the capacity to local and global carriers, CDNs, content providers and others at easily accessible interconnect points across Pakistan enabling true carrier neutrality and open access.

Cybernet is on a mission to bring affordable ultra-fast broadband on its own fiber network and in partnership with mobile and other fixed-line carriers to the far reaches of Pakistan. The PEACE cable project will enable carriers to extend gigabit speeds to the Pakistani population and will be instrumental in meeting the exponential growth in bandwidth demand from mobile and fixed broadband users in Pakistan and neighbouring countries.

Speaking on the occasion, Danish Lakhani, CEO of Cybernet Pakistan, said: “We are humbled to be able to contribute in bringing a submarine cable system that will have an outsized impact on the digital landscape in Paki- stan. PEACE is the only cable system that originates in Pakistan and connects 3 continents (Asia, Africa and Europe) and elevates our country’s strategic standing in the global connectivity race.

This ultra-high capacity cable will boost available bandwidth to meet cur-

rent and future requirements of Paki- stan and that of neighbouring countries. With its ultra-low latency design, the cable will cut down transit time between Pakistan and France to under 90 milliseconds – dramatically improving the response time of internet-based applications and the experience of our users. The cable will also bolster the redundancy of our country’s connectivity to the rest of world. At Cybernet, our vision is to create an enabling environment for Pakistan’s digital landscape where ISPs, carriers, CDNs, content providers and virtually all IT enabled firms can extend affordable ser-

vices to our citizens – while contribut- ing to increasing GDP, IT exports and total factor productivity. The PEACE cable system will contribute significantly in bringing us closer to achieving this vision.”

Foreign roamer allowed to continue using foreign SIMs without any time limit: FBR

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has clarified that a foreign roamer is allowed to continue using foreign SIMs without any time limit and without getting certificate of compliance with technical standards (CoC) from Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA). The FBR has issued frequently asked questions (FAQs) to clarify various issues relating to the mobile phones.

Following are the questions and answers responded by the FBR: Question: "I am roaming in Pakistan; will I be able to use my mobile device in Pakistan?" Answer: "Yes, roamers will be able to use their mobile devices as per DIRBS SOP. The system will accommodate visitors to Pakistan from overseas who are here for a short visit for personal or business purpose as following:

i. "A foreign roamer is allowed to continue using foreign SIMs without any time limit and without getting CoC from PTA. ii. "If a roamer starts using local SIM in his/her mobile device, he/she will not be considered a roamer and will be required to fulfil the conditions of a compliant device.

iii. "Such user will be notified of the deficiency of his/her mobile device through SMS and will have 30 days to complete the requirements before the non-compliant mobile device is blocked.

iv. "If the visitor wants to use local SIM for a period longer than 30 days, he/she is required to get the CoC from PTA along with payment of duty/taxes."

Another questioner asked if he could bring one mobile phone into Pakistan without payment of duty/taxes.

The answer was in affirmative, saying a passenger is allowed to bring one mobile phone without payment of duty/taxes provided his/her stay abroad is more than seven days. Such allowance will only be admissible once during the year.

Another questioner asked if he brings more than one mobile phone, whether or not he needs to pay duty/taxes. He was replied in affirmative, saying only one mobile phone will be allowed free of duty/taxes. In case of other mobile phones, applicable duty/taxes will be paid.

One questioner asked if he would have to pay duty/taxes on a mobile phone which he has been using in Pakistan after returning from abroad. The reply was in negative, saying a mobile phone in personal use of a passenger, which has been activated/registered in Pakistan does not require registration/payment of duty/taxes on his/her return to Pakistan being a case of re-import of baggage. Such a case will be treated independent of the allowances admissible to mobile devices under the baggage rules.

Another questioner asked, "How and where can I register my mobile device if I forget to declare the same on arrival at the airport?"

The FBR replied that the passenger can approach the nearest customs office for registration of the mobile device within 15 days of the arrival date.

Another questioner asked, "Can I avail the allowances admissible under the baggage rules if I forget to declare at the time of arrival at airport?" The reply was in affirmative, saying the international passenger can avail admissible allowances at the time of registration at the customs office.

Huawei unveils new AI chips amid Chinese technology ambitions

Huawei unveils new AI chips amid Chinese technology ambitions

Huawei unveils new AI chips amid Chinese technology ambitions

SHANGHAI: China’s Huawei Technologies Co Ltd, the world’s largest telecom-equipment maker, unveiled an AI chip on Wednesday that will power its servers, in a push to boost its nascent cloud-computing business.

China wants locally made chips inside 40 percent of all smartphones in the domestic market by 2025 and is betting billions of dollars on homegrown champions to get there.

Huawei set up its cloud business unit last year and is now trying to gain a firmer foothold in the domestic public cloud market, currently dominated by Alibaba. While the unit accounts for a small part of Huawei’s overall sales, it has flagged the business as a potential growth driver.

The new 7 nanometre Ascend 910 chipset that Huawei unveiled at its annual global partners’ conference will service this unit and is meant for data centres that crunch mountains of data.

The chip will process data much faster than rival products, Huawei’s rotating chairman, Eric Xu, said, adding it was twice as powerful as its nearest competitor Nvidia’s v100.

Huawei also unveiled another chip that can be used to power surveillance cameras. It expects the Ascend 310 to help make AI cheaper for hardware firms by allowing them to buy readymade modules to fit their own products.

The Ascend 910 will be available from the second quarter of 2019 and the 310 is already on shelves.

Huawei said it will not sell these chipsets separately to customers, but its efforts would still pit it against big US vendors such as Qualcomm, AMD and Nvidia.

Huawei, however, does not expect any “direct competition” with other vendors as it will not sell to third parties, Xu said at the Huawei Connect conference.

Huawei already makes its own processor for its high-end phones but has so far mainly used Intel and Nvidia chips in its servers. The company is the world’s second-largest smartphone maker by volume.

The company will use a mix of its chips and those from other vendors in its servers to cater to various price points, said Qiu Heng, marketing president for Huawei’s enterprise business.

It was not clear how much of Intel or Nvidia components would be replaced.

Huawei’s push to grow its domestic business comes in the backdrop of growing fears that Western consumers could become reluctant to buy Chinese tech goods due to concerns about security risks and allegations of spying by Beijing.

Bloomberg reported last week that some 30 US companies’ systems had been infiltrated by malicious chips inserted by Chinese intelligence agents.

Huawei has long been barred from selling telecom gear in the United States. In August, it was also banned by Australia from supplying equipment for the country’s planned 5G mobile network.—Reuters

Smartphones have more germs than toilet seats: Study

Smartphones have more germs than toilet seats: Study

LONDON: If you think toilet seats are the dirtiest spots around you, take a look at your smartphone. A research has revealed that smartphone screens have three times more germs than toilet seats!

More than a third of people (35%) have never cleaned their smartphones with wipes, a cleaning fluid or a similar product, according to the study done by Insurance2Go, a gadget insurance provider based in Portsmouth, England. “The average smartphone screen has been found to be more than three times dirtier than a toilet seat,” reported, citing the findings.

One in 20 smartphone users was found to clean their phones less than every six months. For the study, researchers swabbed three smartphones — an iPhone 6, a Samsung Galaxy 8 and a Google Pixel — to test for aerobic bacteria, yeast and mould. The findings showed that all areas of the phones “harbour at least some quantity of each type of substance.”

The screens were the filthiest part of the smartphones, filled with germs which may lead to skin problems and other health issues. The screens of the three handsets had a combined total of 254.9 colony-forming units per cm2. This means there was an average of 84.9 units on each screen. “In contrast, a toilet and flush was found to have just 24 units, while an office keyboard and mouse was found to have just five,” the report said. The back of the smartphones had an average of 30 units, the lock button had an average of 23.8 units, and the home button had an average of 10.6 units.

More than a third of the respondents admitted having not cleaned their phones for long. “Our phones are never far from our sides; we take them everywhere with us. Therefore, it’s inevitable that they’ll pick up a few germs along the way,” Gary Beeston, sales and marketing manager at Insurance2go, was quoted as saying.

A fifth of British adults now spend more time online each week than the average time spent at work, said a recent study from the UK’s communication regulator Ofcom.

Two in five adults (40%) first look at their phone within five minutes of waking up, rising to 65 per cent of those aged under 35, while 37% of adults check their phones five minutes before lights out, again rising to 60% of under-35s.

Infinix Working On All New Double Amazing In Its New Line Of Smartphones

Infinix Working On All New Double Amazing In Its New Line Of Smartphones

When Infinix Mobility inaugurated its line of products with the slogan “The future is now”, it truly meant it. Since 2013, the year the company was founded, it has not only stood up to its reputation but has frequently challenged the traditional norms of technology and aesthetics. It has not only imparted uniqueness of unlimited possibilities to its products but has created smartphones that speak for themselves.

For a few months, the social space has been abuzz about Infinix working on an exciting new dimension of mobile photography; something with the name of Double Amazing. As some unofficial reviews have spoken of it in a subtle manner, it might revolutionise the dependency of users on a single camera. If we are to believe what gurus are indicating, Infinix is going to launch Hot 6 Pro, which has a dual rear camera and a dual lock system. The prospective smartphone buyers are very curious though as to how the device would look and feel like.

Hot 6 Pro is going to break the barriers of screen resolution by pushing the limits of the traditional screen and pushing the envelope to an amazing 18:9 Infinity screen.  This Infinity screen would not only catch the eyes of gamers and video lovers but also book aficionados, as it offers more screen real estate for work and for play. Once again Infinix is introducing an Eye Care feature to help protect eyes of users who spend a lot of time using their phones especially at night, which can cause strain and dryness of eyes.

Adding two cameras to snap a single shot is slowly becoming the talk of the town especially since the news of Infinix planning to launch Double Amazing hit the Social Media. According to the tech gurus, the Hot 6 Pro would house two rear-facing cameras of 13 MP and 2 MP capable of rendering images with extraordinary depth of field. It is amazing to see how mobile photography has become more powerful and user-friendly than conventional photography. Varied camera dynamics are not what Infinix is going to end its scope of imagination with and intends to go far beyond by introducing highly advanced image editing tools, including 9-grade beauty mode that makes the subject stand out in the photos. The front cam is no less than the rear ones. A 5MP 4-in-1 camera is all that it takes to have a perfect selfie.

The processing power of Hot 6 Pro looks to be as impressive as its cameras. It is expected that Infinix will equip Hot 6 Pro with a Qualcomm SnapDragon 425 processor that ensures smooth processing, even for heavy duty multi-tasking operations.

With the advent of tools that can penetrate into the private folders in smartphones, cell phone companies are finding it challenging to keep up with the pace of malware development to control its implications. Infinix seems to have a dual solution to that; a face lock plus finger lock. Both of these features ensure that the privacy of the users remains protected and safe. And to round off the specs, Hot 6 Pro would have a huge 4000nAh battery to sustain operations all day long, making Hot 6 Pro an ideal choice for everyone from selfie-lovers to students and business professionals.

At an unbelievable price of about Rs. 19,000, Hot 6 Pro seems like an unbeatable choice for a smartphone. The Hot 6 Pro promises to offer its users a world without boundaries; a life without limitations.
