Jazz & LUMS collaborate to launch a platform for disruptive ideas

Jazz & LUMS collaborate to launch a platform for disruptive ideas

Jazz & LUMS collaborate to launch a platform for disruptive ideas

It was an evening of new beginnings for the Jazz and LUMS communities, when the collaborative national initiative, ‘DisruptEd: Ideas that matter’ was recently launched at the LUMS campus.

As an initiative that aims to prioritize innovation and digitization in the landscape of Pakistan, ‘DisruptEd: Ideas that matter’ is a speaker series that will serve as a platform for stimulating discourse and disruptive ideas that connect the different facets of the contemporary ecosystem and create pathways for unlearning and re-imagining.

The inaugural event of the series was a talk on ‘Leadership in the Age of Rapid Digitalisation by Aamir Ibrahim, CEO Jazz. The evening kicked off with an address by the LUMS Vice Chancellor, Dr. Arshad Ahmad, who offered a nuanced perspective on what the objectives of this national partnership are and also what the platform will serve as in the months to come. Dr. Ahmad very warmly welcomed Mr. Ibrahim to LUMS and thanked him for his support in getting this aspiring endeavor off the ground.

As Mr. Ibrahim took the floor, he first introduced himself as the CEO of Jazz, Pakistan’s largest telecom and Internet company, with over 55 million subscribers and one of the country’s largest businesses. In explaining what his vision in leading a digital giant like Jazz is, Mr. Ibrahim said, “The main thing for Jazz is not to be the biggest but to be the best in terms of how we analyze the landscape and how we move forward.”

Addressing Pakistan’s current climate, he shared that in terms of digital readiness, we are far behind, and analogized Pakistan’s digital landscape with cricket. “We are doing better than before, but we are nowhere close to our required run rate,” he said. Elaborating on this, Mr. Ibrahim explained that if we were scoring two runs an over before, we are now perhaps scoring three runs an over. This may seem like a huge feat in that it is a 50 percent improvement, but for Pakistan to be considered seriously relevant anywhere in the world, we need to be scoring 10 runs an over. “So the gap that I see is far more than the progress that we’ve made,” he said.

Mr. Ibrahim addressed many of the challenges that arise in the digital ecosystem in Pakistan and cited that currently, only one in every five Pakistani is somewhat digitally literate, reinforcing the idea that we are far behind, but also displaying all that we can do. “What I see is an opportunity,” he said.

Shedding light on the purpose of the DisruptEd platform, Mr. Ibrahim expressed that both Jazz and LUMS wanted to create a forum where likeminded people can challenge one another in terms of what needs to be done collectively to take the country forward.
The audience too enjoyed the interactive talk as they got the chance to ask Mr. Ibrahim questions and
partake in active discourse about Pakistan’s digital future.

In an effort to highlight all that is still to come, and conclude the evening on a note of hope, Mr. Ibrahim emphasized that Pakistan has a positive future and that we need to work together to achieve it.

“You have very strong voices in every single sphere that you operate in,” he said. “Please use your voice towards asking all the stakeholders, companies, educational institutes, and the government that you deserve a better technological infrastructure because without that infrastructure this country isn’t moving forward.”

Jazz Celebrates The Success Of Its Smart Schools Programme

Jazz Celebrates The Success Of Its Smart Schools Programme

Jazz Celebrates The Success Of Its Smart Schools Programme

Islamabad – 15th April, 2019: Launched in October 2017, the Jazz Smart Schools programme has been a success story so far. To celebrate this success, a ceremony was held, where Shafqat Mahmood, Federal Minister for Education, Ursula Burns, VEON’s CEO and Chairman and Saif Chi, Huawei’s CEO graced the occasion to commend the team behind the programme and encourage its adoption in all middle schools of Islamabad.

The ceremony was also a way to recognize top performers from amongst the programme. 100 students received tablets and certificates by Ursula Burns and Mr. Shafqat Mahmood for their exceptional performance during mid-term examinations.

In Pakistan, where 38% school going students hardly know how to string a sentence in any language or do basic math, the programme has successfully taught 28,000+ middle school girls blended learning in 75 public schools of Islamabad. Also 800+ female teachers have been trained to use tech to teach using smart learning solutions based on existing curriculum. Since the program, both the assessments of students and the training capacity of teachers have improved considerably.

Talking about the need for similar digitally enabled educational initiatives, the Federal Minister for Education Shafqat Mahmood stated, "Digital skills are a priority for us because they enable learning on a larger and more effective scale. We will be able to bridge the digital literacy divide in Pakistan with programs like the Jazz Smart Schools.”

Launched as a two-year pilot with Knowledge Platform, the Jazz Smart Schools programme has recorded significant improvement in five areas: student learning outcomes; teaching quality; student engagement, expanded use of technology, and improved accountability and monitoring of results.

“The results clearly confirm how Jazz and Pakistan Federal Directorate of Education is committed to the digital transformation of Pakistan’s youth. Digital education is the future and I’m very pleased to see that the students at Jazz Smart Schools have taken to it like any other child in the Silicon Valley,” said Ursula Burns.

“We hope that this program is now implemented across the country, as it is in line with not only the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 2030, but the Pakistan government’s strategic vision 2025,” she added.

A digital sustainability initiative under VEON’s ‘Make Your Mark’ programme, Jazz Smart Schools are designed to increase student-learning outcomes and improve teaching methodology by a smart learning solution deployed through a digital blended learning platform. The idea is to digitize Pakistan’s youth bulge and equip them to access entrepreneurial opportunities when they are ready.

Pre-tests were organized for all 20,000 female students in the programme to evaluate their current learning levels based on subjects they studied in previous grades. The internal mid-term evaluation results recorded remarkable improvement in student learning outcomes. The formal results of the program will be measured once these students appear for their external board examinations scheduled in April 2019.

Jazz Outsmarts Competition with its Strategically Positioned Billboards

Jazz Outsmarts Competition with its Strategically Positioned Billboards

Jazz Outsmarts Competition with its Strategically Positioned Billboards

Jazz positions itself as the country’s fastest mobile network – a fact which is undeniable given the two consecutive Ookla Speedtest awards it has received recently. As per the latest Ookla Speedtest score, Jazz received a score of 16.01 with average download speed of 17.13 Mbps, beating competition hands down.

With facts being what they are, it was quite naive of Telenor’s advertising team to come up with a campaign that blatantly spewed lies about being a fast mobile network. It was only a matter of time before Jazz took matters into their own hands and dissed the competition’s campaign with a cunning hoarding of their own.

The “Look Who’s Talking!” billboards by Jazz can be seen in various locations around Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad right next to every Telenor Hoarding, which says “Speed Par Aao”. A girl can be seen pointing towards the Telenor billboard, clearly belittling the competition.

Jokes apart, it is one thing to take a dig at a rival company publically but another to deceive the people. Telenor is clearly misleading customers into believing something which isn’t true with their latest campaign and Jazz’s response is something that’s not only humorous but also cheekily outsmarts its competitor with the truth.

Jazz’s unconcealed response and innovative advertising strategy is on point with these billboards. This move has been serving as a constant source of laughter for everyday commuters since it was put up.

Jazz Receives the "GSMA Mobile for Development Utilities Innovation Fund" Award

Jazz, Pakistan’s leading digital communications company, has been awarded the prestigious GSMA Mobile for Development Utilities Innovation Fund, launched in June 2013 to test and scale the use of mobile to improve or increase access to energy, water and sanitation services.

The grant was awarded to Jazz’s for their “Energy and Line Losses Reduction in Pakistan” idea in collaboration with Centre for Intelligent Systems & Network Research (CISNR) & Peshawar Electric Supply Company (PESCO), which uses an indigenous solution developed by their partner, CISNR, to address the biggest issue being faced by local power distribution sector; line losses and electricity theft.

Jazz has been successful in securing the seed grant after an extensive evaluation and due diligence exercise carried out by GSMA among multiple organizations from various markets. Not only telecom operators but technology innovators and development organizations from Africa and Asian regions were part of the competition, as well.

“Empowering customers digitally is no small feat and requires constant reinvention and innovation. This is another commitment to that philosophy to address ease for masses as they access important utility services,” said Aamir Ibrahim, CEO – Jazz. He continued, “We have partnered with GSMA for Energy and Line Loss Reduction Solution in order to improve the overall power distribution sector.”

Jazz aims to ensure that the digitization of these utilities improved the quality of life for Pakistanis. The solution utilized the connectivity provided by Jazz to remotely monitor and manage distribution boxes, transformers and grid station feeders to ensure a more efficient and precise process that identifies points of failures, faulty lines and theft locations.

The seed fund is to be used to source and install the devices in selected subdivisions of PESCO. CISNR will be responsible for the device units (Transfocure and Electrocure), whereas infrastructure hosting and connectivity would be provided by Jazz. In addition to this, it will also address challenges such as load management at the transformer level and consumption wise distribution in order to optimize the distribution network.

Successful execution and scale through this grant will surely prove to be a strong case for all other distribution companies, which are still not able to come up with a standardized solution to address the on grid-power distribution issues in Pakistan.
