At least 28 dead, dozens missing after Neelum Valley flash floods

At least 28 dead, dozens missing after Neelum Valley flash floods

MUZAFFARABAD: At least 28 people have died and dozens more, including women and children, are missing after heavy rains and flash floods wreaked havoc in Azad Kashmir’s Neelum Valley on Monday.

Over 150 houses in the Laswa area of the valley were damaged and dozens of people were swept away in floods that officials said were caused by a cloudburst.

Many structures in Laswa’s main market, including two mosques, were also completely destroyed. Traffic flow in the area has been severely disrupted, while cell phone and internet services are also affected.

Several people are still stranded in their houses and efforts are underway to evacuate them.

Teams including officials from the district administration, disaster management authority and local police are conducting rescue operations in the area.

State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) Director Operations Saaedur Rehman Qureshi confirmed the death toll and said it was likely to rise over the coming hours.

He said the deceased include 10 Islamic missionaries from the Tablighi Jamaat, four of whom were from Lahore, five from Faisalabad and one from Sheikhupura.

Officials also confirmed the deaths of five people, including a little girl, after a touring jeep fell into River Neelum. One person survived the accident and was admitted to hospital in critical condition.

“We are frantically searching for more missing people. This is a popular tourist spot so there is a strong probability of the death toll increasing. An emergency control room has been established in Muzaffarabad (058-21921643) to supervise and coordinate the rescue operation.”

Cloudburst is a rare phenomenon in which a large amount of water pours down on the ground due to the burst of clouds. Normally rainfall over 100 mm per hour is considered as a cloudburst.

Last week, a flood hit several villages in Golen Gol area of Chitral district after a glacial lake burst its banks overnight, toppling electricity poles and inundating roads and farmlands.

The glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) occurred after the Jam Ashpar glacier – a popular tourist destination in Chitral – exploded overnight.

This was the first GLOF since 2015, when a similar incident killed at least three people and caused extensive damage to property and infrastructure and affected more than a quarter of a million residents in Chitral.

#IndianOccupiedKashmir  -  60% pellet victims suffer various degree blindness in IOK: study

Srinagar, March 26, 2019 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, a latest study and the first one to evaluate vision in pellet-injured eyes – has revealed that 59.3 percent of the victims suffer visual impairment of various degrees among them 36.7 ending up with severe blindness in the territory.

The study at Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar has lent scientific support to the fears about lethality of the metallic pellet shotguns widely used by Indian troops, paramilitary and police personnel in Kashmir against protesters. The study included 664 patients out of the 1066, who were admitted to SMHS Hospital Srinagar between July 2016 and January 2018, with eye injuries suffered due to pellet shotguns.

The researcher found that in 59.3 percent of the studied eyes, there was visual impairment of “varying degrees”. The data compiled for these injuries reveals that 10.8 percent eyes were completely blinded by pellet shotgun injuries. In these eyes, there was “no perception of light (PL)”, implying that the victims could not perceive bright light shone into their eye.

At least 32.1 percent of the studied group had suffered closed globe injuries – those where eye wall had not ruptured – while the rest had open globe injuries, involving perforating trauma to one or more layers of the eye. Of these, about 85 percent had suffered severe injuries – grade D and grade E.

The study titled “Clinical Profile and Visual Outcome of Pellet Gun related Ocular Trauma” was carried out by Dr Faisal Qayoom Shah of postgraduate department of ophthalmology at the GMC, under guidance of Prof Tariq Qureshi. The aim of the study, carried out over a period of one and half year, “was to characterize clinical profile of such eye injuries, determine visual outcome and evaluate various factors affecting visual outcome”.

A senior ophthalmologist at GMC Srinagar said that considering limited data on eye trauma by pellet shotguns, the research assumes significance for practitioners in Kashmir and outside involved in treating such injuries.

The researcher has been able to demonstrate how site of the entry wound has significance in determining the visual outcome of such an injury, while also highlighting the role of well-timed, and well-carried-out vitreo-retinal surgery in reducing visual impairment.

The youngest victim studied is aged 5, while the oldest one is aged 59 years. Of the studied eyes, 9 were of female victims. The mean age of the study population is 22.5 years. These people were injured by two types of pellets, as per the researcher – 2.01 mm and 2.26 mm diameter, the study states.

‘We don’t want war’, says widow of second Indian pilot

Srinagar, March 04, 2019: A video has emerged of Indian Air Force (IAF) Pilot Ninand’s wife in which she confirms that her husband had, in fact, died on February 27. In the video, she can be heard saying, “Ninand [pilot, her husband] spoke to me on the morning of February 26 for the last time. On Feb 27, he [Ninad] sent me a message saying he would talk later, he was busy. “That was the last time she heard from him. Urging not to advocate war, she says, “We don’t want war. You don’t know what the damages of war are. We don’t want war. No other soldiers should die from either side.”

In her video, she also requests the Indian netizens not to promote war. She says, “I have a request; Facebook warriors, please stop the social media war. If you really are eager [to fight], join the military and try it for yourself that how does it feel.” Urging not to advocate war, she says, “We don’t want war. You don’t know what the damages of war are. We don’t want war. No other soldiers should die from either side. “

Jammu and #Kashmir : How #AfshanAshiq went from kicking a football to picking up a stone

Jammu and #Kashmir : How #AfshanAshiq went from kicking a football to picking up a stone

Srinagar: Three weeks ago, a gifted footballer from Jammu and Kashmir, Afshan Ashiq, picked up a stone for the first time in her life. A photograph that captured her hurling it in rage at policemen would go on to become the new defining image of stone pelters in the Valley.

Yesterday, the 21-year-old football coach met Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti at the Tourist Reception Centre ground where she explained her side of the story and requested the CM to ensure better infrastructure for sportspeople, especially girls.

Mehbooba was on a visit to the ground to meet specially abled children and footballers during a special camp.

“I am not feeling any guilt about what I did that fateful day. It was my reaction to the developing situation at that moment,” Ashiq, who trained at the prestigious National Institute of Sports in Patiala, told PTI.

The footballer, who runs the Kashmir FC Academy, coaches 70 youngsters — 40 girls and 30 boys — while she pursues her bachelors degree from Womens College at Maulana Azad road.

Her photograph, taken during a clash between students and law enforcing agencies in the heart of the city, appeared in various local and national newspapers and went viral on social networking sites.

“I along with a group of students was on my way to the TRC grounds for practice when we got caught in the clash. A policeman hurled abuses at us and even slapped one of my students which enraged me,” she narrated.

“We resorted to stone pelting in self-defence and to convey a message that girls shouldnt be considered weak.”

Ashiq said she was more pained as the policeman was also a Kashmiri, and a Muslim. “We did not target any CRPF or Army personnel. It was our reaction to the police high-handedness,” she said.

As soon as Mehbooba accompanied by sports minister Imran Ansari entered the TRC grounds to interact with the specially-abled children and women footballers, Ashiq, like many present there, welcomed and interacted with her.

She also posed with the CM and the sports minister when they got a group photograph clicked with her team.

“I am a sportsperson and have nothing to do with anything else. I am not against the government,” Ashiq said. “I leave home in the morning and return late in the evening. My busy schedule does not allow me to concentrate on anything else.”

However, the young coach said she would not hesitate in picking up a stone again if she felt her students were under any sort of a threat. “I will not tolerate any harm coming their way,” she said.

Ashiq said she was introduced to the chief minister as the girl who was seen in the picture pelting the police with stones.

“But I kept my head high as I have done no wrong and informed her about the circumstances leading to the incident. The chief minister heard me and encouraged me for defending my students,” she said.

Ashiq said she requested Mehbooba to consider her demand for better facilities for women to shine in the field of sports and also asked for a permanent job.

The chief minister said her government has focused on sports development as a priority area and efforts were being made to upgrade infrastructure and develop other amenities to provide better sport facilities for the states youth.

“The talent and potential of the youth of the state have been proved time and again and it would be the endeavour of my government to give maximum opportunities to them to display their talent,” Mehbooba said.  Siasat and PTI

Indian Troops killed six innocent in Indian-controlled #Kashmir

Indian Troops killed six innocent in Indian-controlled #Kashmir

At least six civilians have been killed and dozens more have been injured after New Delhi’s paramilitary forces opened fire at protesters in Indian-controlled Kashmir.

The fierce clashes erupted after stone-throwing protesters stormed polling stations during a by-election in Budgam district near the main city of Srinagar on Sunday .

Paramilitary troops fired bullets and shotgun pellets as thousands of protesters shouting slogans against Indian rule charged into voting booths in the troubled area.

Shantmanu, Kashmir's chief electoral officer said that protesters tried to snatch or damage electronic voting machines in at least a dozen places.

"Violent protests happened at many places in Budgam. Protesters damaged and snatched EVMs (electronic voting machines) at some places," said Shantmanu, who uses only one name.

"It was not a good day for all of us. Six civilians were killed and 70 were wounded," the official added.

"There were more than 200 incidents of violence...which included stone-pelting, petrol bomb attacks, setting ablaze of a polling station," Shantmanu noted

Hospital sources in Srinagar confirmed that many were grievously injured with bullets fired by police and paramilitary troops.

Pro-independence factions in Kashmir had called for a boycott of the vote. The boycott resulted in heightened security and low voter turnout as the polling began.

Figures show only 6.5 percent of voters turned out to cast their ballot, the lowest ever participation recorded in any election in the disputed territory. At least 70 polling stations were shut due to the violence.

The by-election is being held to fill a vacant seat in the Lok Sabha, India's lower house of parliament. The seat had fallen vacant after a lawmaker resigned to protest the killing of civilians during unrest last year.

The Muslim-majority region has witnessed an increase in mass protests and violent attacks since early July 2016, when Burhan Wani, a top figure in a pro-independence group, was killed in a shootout with Indian troops.

Thousands of government troops have been deployed to the region and nearly 90 people have lost their lives and more than 12,000 wounded in the ensuing crackdown.

The government crackdown has failed to halt the protests against the Indian rule in Kashmir.

Kashmir has been divided between India and Pakistan but claimed in full by both since the two partitioned and gained independence from Britain in 1947. The two countries have fought three wars over the disputed territory.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's former dictator General Pervez Musharraf has said his administration 'managed freedom fighters' in Kashmir but later realised a political process was needed to negotiate the issue with India, a media report today said.

Musharraf, who served as Pakistan's president from 2001 to 2008 after he threw out the elected government in a coup in 1999, said his government was able to force India to discuss issues that New Delhi was unwilling to negotiate.

Kashmir: A Major among 4 Indian soldiers killed in Kashmir

Omar Abdullah alleges Modi's ministers provoking Pakistan

Omar Abdullah alleges Modi's ministers provoking Pakistan

SRINAGAR: Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah triggered a controversy on Thursday, saying Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ministers were provoking Pakistan to launch terror attacks like in Jammu and Kashmir's Nagrota town where seven soldiers were killed on Tuesday.

"The Nagrota attack is a result of statements made by various ministers against Pakistan," the National Conference leader told reporters on the sidelines of his address to party workers in south Kashmir Anantnag district.

Abdullah said he disapproved of Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar's statement that India didn't want a war with Pakistan "but if someone looks at the country with evil eye, we will gouge his eyes out and put them back in his hand".

He said if such a statement is made by the Defence Minister then "we should expect attacks like Nagrota".

He said Modi's claim that demonetisation would end terrorism in the country was another reason for terror attacks being stepped up in Jammu and Kashmir.

Omar’s statement is pure cowardice laced with double standards: Centre

Omar’s statement is pure cowardice laced with double standards: Centre

JAMMU: Coming down heavily on former chief minister Omar Abdullah for calling on the Narendra Modi Government not to blame Pakistan for the Kashmir unrest, the Centre on Sunday asserted that his statement was laced with double standards, adding that the National Conference (NC) chief has made this remarks in order to redeem what he and three generations of his party have done to Kashmir.

Speaking to ANI here, Minister of State in Prime Minister's Office (PMO) Jitendra Singh stated that the current government is trying to clear the mess of the previous NC regime in the state.

“He (Omar) is accusing himself, his father and grandfather, who have been at the helm of affairs for decades, which has led to this mess. So, we should also blame these wise worthies who left this mess. Present government is trying to clear the mess in the brief period of two years of power. He is trying to redeem what he and three generations of his party have done to Kashmir,” Singh said.

The Union Minister alleged that ‘Kashmir-centric’ politicians continue to openly accuse the Centre over Pakistan, but do not have the courage to say a single word against the provocative statements by the hostile neighbour, as it would irk Islamabad’s sympathisers in Kashmir.

“They know this is the resilience and greatness of Indian democracy that they can abuse India and Indian government and get away with it. But if they make statements inviting wrath of separatists, then they are risking themselves. So, I think this is cowardice with double standards,” Singh stated.

Abdullah on Saturday had criticised the Centre for failing to take concrete measures to curb the unrest in Kashmir post the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen militant Burhan Wani and said that it would be a "grave mistake" to always blame Pakistan and turning a blind eye to internal issues.

"Simply blaming Pakistan for the present situation, then, it would mean that we don't have to do anything to prevent the unrest, which I think would be a grave mistake. We need to have talks internally, we need to solve this political crisis and until we are conscious of this reality, I don't think we can take any concrete action," Omar said.

Omar's remarks came days after he reprimanded incumbent Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti for the prolonged unrest in Kashmir and asked the latter to take responsibility for the same.
