Prime Minister Imran Khan inaugurates the 400-year-old historic “Picture Wall” of Lahore Fort

Aerial view of the Lahore fort, looking from north-west corner, showing full length of Picture wall which is nearly 1,500 feet in length and some 50 feet in height, (450 x 15 meters), Pakistan.

Lahore, Pakistan: - Imran Khan, Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, inaugurated the restoration of the 400-year-old “Picture Wall” of Lahore Fort. The Picture Wall is one of the principal features of the Lahore Fort UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The conservation of the 240-foot-long western façade has been carried out by the Aga  Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC), and its country affiliate, the Aga Khan Cultural Service-Pakistan (AKCS-P), in collaboration with the Walled City of Lahore Authority (WCLA).

Speaking on the occasion, Prime Minister Imran Khan emphasised the need for educational institutions to develop archaeology as a subject and the importance of preserving heritage sites in Pakistan. Citing sustainable conservation models from other countries where heritage sites are made economically viable by converting to hotels, the Prime Minister applauded how this model has been successfully implemented by the Aga Khan Development Network in northern areas of Pakistan.

Together with the Shah Burj Gate (Hathi Pol), the Picture Wall forms the original private entrance to the Fort. The wall is exquisitely decorated with imagery of hunting, battle scenes, angels and demons, human figures, animals, birds, as well as geometric and floral patterns.  Built approximately 400 years ago during the Mughal era, it is one of the largest murals in the world. It is embellished in cut glazed tile mosaic work, filigree work, fresco, painted lime plaster and cut brickwork.

Salman Beg, CEO, Aga Khan Cultural Service, Pakistan said, “The process of conservation included the stabilisation and consolidation of the Picture Wall’s structure, as well as its decorative elements, and warranted the expertise of both heritage crafts as well as conservators. It also included archaeological excavation in order to expose the original Mughal era floor level which is seven feet below the present ground level.”

Prototype conservation of a 35-foot-long section of the Picture Wall was initiated in February 2017. The approach was validated in an international workshop in January 2018. Physical conservation of the western façade of the Picture Wall was carried out from July 2018 to March 2019, with funding from the Royal Norwegian Embassy, the Government of Punjab, the Federal Republic of Germany, and the Aga Khan Trust for Culture.

In 2016, the Walled City of Lahore Authority took up the conservation of the historic Imperial Kitchens, as well as its adaptive re-use, in order to bring it into the Fort’s touristic circuit. The conservation work has been carried out in collaboration with Aga Khan Cultural Service–Pakistan, who conserved and rehabilitated the ruined eastern wing. Today, the historic structure has been conserved and put back into use, which is expected to enhance the cultural environment of the Lahore Fort complex.

AKTC, part of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), focuses on the physical, social, cultural and economic revitalisation of communities in the developing world. AKDN provides a broad range of services in Pakistan – and has been doing so for over 100 years. Endeavours of AKDN in education, health, rural development, poverty alleviation, restoration of Islamic heritage, tourism, and microfinance have tried to create a critical mass of integrated development activities that offer people in a given area not only a rise in income, but a broad, sustained improvement in the overall quality of life.

Due gas supply shortage - #Fertiliser plants shut for 30 days in winter

Due gas supply shortage - #Fertiliser plants shut for 30 days in winter

Due gas supply shortage - #Fertiliser plants shut for 30 days in winter

LAHORE: The short supply of urea fertiliser on the back of irregular domestic manufacturing due to erratic and short supply of natural gas may lead to a widening gap of the essential agricultural input in March, latest official data suggests.

According to National Fertiliser Development Centre, urea stock levels in March 2019 are estimated at 31,000 tons only against buffer stock requirement of 200,000 tons. In February, production of urea touched the lowest levels in ongoing winter month, as it faltered to 350,000 tons against this winter’s monthly average of 473,000 tons.

Urea production in Rabi starting from October 2018 peaked to 559,000 tons in October. However, from December, it started to decline steeply as availability of natural gas to fertiliser plants started to squeeze.

From 512,000 tons of urea produced in December 2018, its manufacturing dipped to 460,000 tons in January due to closure of LNG import terminals on one reason or another.

Keeping in view irregular functioning of fertiliser plants, shortage of urea is feared to aggravate further.

Commenting on deteriorating urea stock, sources said inventory of 31,000 tons in March was like nothing across all four provinces and Azad Jammu Kashmir. Apart from ill-fated urea plants on Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Ltd (SNGPL) network, it was learnt that Engro’s new plant also faced closure due to technical issue.

Even plants on Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) face the issue of gas curtailment or low pressure and this problem unfortunately continues to pose a risk to the viability of the whole fertiliser industry.

Also Read: SNGPL fails to restore gas supply to fertiliser plants

Diversion of gas to other consumers during winter season leads to decline in production. Only in the month of February, urea production was less by 0.7 million bags of 50kg each. “How can the market cope with this huge gap between demand and supply,” sources asked.

Despite federal government’s clear policy and issuance of necessary instructions to gas utility coupled with Economic Coordination Committee’s (ECC) decision to run urea plants on continuous basis, gas supply to urea manufacturing remains erratic during the winter months, especially during December to February.

Urea prices during February again inched to Rs1,900/50kg bag in retail markets due to supply disruption against Rs1,800/bag.

Two plants on SNGPL network faced closure for about a week—from February 18 to February 25, 2019. This closure was due to SNGPL’s insistence to either clear subsidy by government or plants pay 100 percent LNG payments, which is in fact contrary to the ECC decision, sources add.

In this latest case, delay by government to pay approved subsidy to another government entity—SNGPL, caused gas shutdown of urea manufacturing plants.

The intermitted production of urea plants in winter led to production loss of approximate 1.5 million bags. Resultantly, urea stocks in the country plummeted to severely low level.

Urea fertiliser is considered an import nutrient for increasing productivity of the farming sector, as it constitutes around two-third of the total fertiliser demand in the country. However, gas curtailment remains a concern for local industry despite several initiatives taken by the present government.

It may be noted that SNGPL resorted to cutting gas supply to fertiliser plants by mid February despite clear ECC instructions for uninterrupted running of plants. This led to disruption in urea manufacturing.

Supply of natural gas to Fatima Fertilizer and Agritech plants remained irregular due to one reason or another.

Successive interventions by advisor Razzak Dawood, and Finance Minister Asad Umar helped streamlining gas supply and resultant resumption of fertiliser plants.

Sources said the government should take concrete steps to ensure smooth supply to fertiliser manufacturing plants with a view to fulfilling demand of the agriculture sector. It was only possible through clear cut policy and a well thought out strategy for its implementation.

Punjab is hosting about 80,000 or more Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) patients

Punjab is hosting about 80,000 or more Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) patients. According to the report exposed by private media around 133,529 people are infected in Pakistan.

Discussing disease like Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is considered a taboo. People as a substitute to fight with this issue associate this disease with sexual misconduct.

Though the health department has begun challenging awareness campaigns to educate the masses about the disease, as per their claims. The progress reported so far is very low.

Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) President Professor Ajmal Hasan Naqvi elaborated that blood transfusion is the major cause due to which people mostly get infected with HIV. Other reasons can be organ or tissue transplant from an HIV-infected donor or have unprotected sex with an HIV infected person.

He pointed that health department, civil society, and NGOs should hold the responsibility to create awareness among the common people, otherwise, shallow media campaigns are useless.

Several steps had been taken including registration of barbers and establishment of clinics across Punjab to cut the threat according to the health department spokesperson.

However, Punjab University Social and Behavioral Science Dean Professor Zakria Zakar said that the steps were not enough to cope with the virus. He said government will have to take it as a top priority as the situation was alarming, and the deadly disease will be affecting our young generation.

#Lahore gets a female station house officer (SHO) after 17 years,

LAHORE ': A female sub-inspector was appointed the station house officer (SHO) of a regular police station in Lahore on Friday.

DIG Operations Dr Haider Ashraf promoted Ghazala Sharif to the post of the Rang Mahal Police Station SHO – making her the first woman to have been appointed to this position in the city after 17 years.

Besides, sub-inspector Nabila Kausar has been appointed the SHO of the women’s Race Course Police Station (RCPS).

The Punjab CM ‘s Strategic Reforms Unit (Law & Order) tweeted:
Chief Minister's SRU @smucmo
Proud to announce that @Lahorepoliceops appointed first female SHO in #Lahore after 17 years-#womenempowerment for a stronger #Pakistan

Lahore, the provincial capital of Punjab, a city of approximately 15 million people, has 84 police stations. However, there is only one women’s police station in the city. The RCPS is used to keep female suspects behind bars. Cases whereby both the suspect and the person who has filed a complaint are female are registered at the RCPS.

Police detain 60 people for questioning

The DIG’s step to appoint a female SHO came as a result of new officers receiving training specifically for this post.  A refresher and training course of over a 100 inspectors and sub-inspectors including women was conducted at the Qila Gujjar Singh Police Lines.

There are five more female officers who are going under training and doing refresher course for SHOs. They would also be considered to be posted as SHOs.

The purpose of the refresher course was to bring forth new officers who could be posted as SHOs.

For many years, the police department, because of a shortage of trained officers, have had to persist with a certain pool of officers to fill the SHO slots.

Apart from Ghazala, other female sub-inspectors are also taking the refresher course so that they can be considered for appointment as SHOs.
