The list recognizes the top 100 companies across the world from a pool of nearly 6,000 publicly listed companies and evaluates them on up to 17 environmental, social and governance indicators. The list identifies companies that deliver superior value for society and also generate strong financial performance and demonstrate longevity. The Global 100 Index has outperformed its benchmark (the MSCI All Country World Index) by close to a third with a cumulative return on investment of 163 percent to end of year 2017.

Motorola Announces the ‘Transform the Smartphone’ Challenge in Europe, Middle East & Africa

Motorola Mobility, a Lenovo company, is giving startups, developers, and creators the opportunity to break the limitations of smartphones and present their ideas at Viva Technology 2017. 

Billed as the world’s ‘rendezvous’ for game-changers, Viva Technology, also known as VivaTech, is an international innovation showcase taking place in Paris on June 15-17, 2017. Bringing together thousands of the brightest entrepreneurs and most imaginative start-ups, alongside top investors, developers and opinion leaders, VivaTech provides a platform for participants from over 200 countries to find inspiration, generate new contacts and accelerate their business growth. Attendance at this year’s event is expected to surpass last year’s 50,000 visitors. 

As part of VivaTech 2017, Motorola has extended its ‘Transform the Smartphone’ challenge, to encourage developers, startups, and other creators to break the limitations of what a smartphone can be. The challenge provides an opportunity for participants to demonstrate their creative skills, while adding their expertise and vision to the Moto Mod universe. 
Participants will also get the opportunity to present their Moto Mod campaign on the IndieGogo Crowdfunding platform. This gives Moto Z customers the chance to fund participants’ projects, while also providing early access to new Moto Mods when they become available.

Moto Mods snap easily onto any Moto Z phone. They fit perfectly and securely to transform your smartphone and provide users with unlimited possibilities! The concept of the Moto Mods is simple: They can be just about anything you can dream up.  Whether it’s a film projector, a top-of-the-line speaker or even a blood pressure monitor – the possibilities are endless. 

The ‘Transform the Smartphone’ challenge gives developers, creators, and startups the chance to contribute to the creation of the next generation of Moto Mods. To participate in the Transform the Smartphone Challenge, submissions must be completed online by May 25, 2017. Pitch candidates will be selected by June 5, and a jury at VivaTech will choose the top five pitches. Each of the five top teams will receive the Moto Z and Moto Mods Development Kit, to create their prototype and mount a crowdfunding campaign with IndieGogo. The final winner will be invited to present their Moto Mod to a group of executives and developer teams at Motorola Mobility’s Chicago headquarters, and they will be considered for the worldwide accelerator program.

#Lenovo Tops Laptop Mag's Annual Brand Rankings, #Apple Falls to 5th Place

NEW YORK: In a major industry shake-up, Apple is no longer the leading laptop brand. After dominating Laptop Mag's Best and Worst Brands for seven years in a row, the MacBook-maker dropped to fifth place this year. Lenovo took first place in Laptop Mag's special report, followed by Asus, Dell and HP.

Each year since 2010, Laptop Mag, part of Purch's tech brand portfolio, has published its Best and Worst Laptop Brands list, which rates the major manufacturers based on product quality, innovation, value and selection, design, and tech support.  

While Apple still delivers top-notch support, the company dropped dramatically in the overall list due to lower review scores and limited value and selection in its lineup. This year, the company alienated many mainstream consumers by pricing its new laptops above $1,299. On the high end, Apple's new MacBook Pros got rid of the USB ports and SD-card readers that creative professionals need.

"Apple fell so sharply because the company focused on more expensive systems with nice-to-have features like the Touch Bar while moving too quickly to ditch the features creative pros rely on," said Mark Spoonauer, Laptop Mag's editor-in-chief. "Other laptop brands have really stepped up their game, especially in the 2-in-1 category."

Lenovo won the Best and Worst Brands by producing many high-quality laptops, particularly in its ThinkPad and Yoga lines. The company also provided strong support and industry-leading innovations, like the Yoga Book and its completely flat Halo keyboard.

"Lenovo has had one of the best and most innovative product lines in the business for a long time," said Avram Piltch, Laptop Mag's editorial director. "This year, the company took its products to the next level and brought its support along for the ride."

Of the 10 brands rated, Microsoft placed last, not because of poor quality but rather a lack of new products and innovation. The company's only laptop-related product release during the evaluation period, which lasted from Feb. 1, 2016, to March 1, 2017, was a new performance dock for its existing Surface Book. Samsung took ninth place due to a combination of poor tech support, limited selection and lower-rated products.

(via more news) Lenovo has some interesting plans for Pakistani audience in the year 2017 as they are planning to bring few impressive smartphones in the first quarter. Just like 2016 promises, the company seems quite optimistic for the year ahead. However, it would only be confirmed when it reaches consumers this time.

Sources have confirmed that It is going to introduce three models of Motorola smartphones. The name is not new for Pakistanis as the brand was a success in Pakistan for years almost a decade ago with models like Moto Razr which was a razor thin clamshell then. This time the Android filled Moto Z, Moto Z Paly and Moto M will likely land into Pakistan in February 2016, an official hinted.

Moto Z

Motorola Moto Z was released only a few months ago, and now the owner company Lenovo has decided to bring it in Pakistan. It is a decent device for the people who like to keep a powerful smartphone in their pocket.

Motorola Z has a display size of 5.5-inches. For photography, there is a 13MP camera on the rear, with all the necessary features. Moreover, you can capture your cool selfies with its 5MP front shooter. The phone comes with a massive 4GB of RAM. The operating system is Android v6.0 Marshmallow, but an upgrade to 7.0 Nougat for Moto phones has already been announced.

The phone packs a fingerprint scanner, an internal storage of 32/64GB, which can be increased by adding a MicroSD card of up to 256GB. In addition to that, there is a fast-charging battery of 2600mAh. There are reports that Motorola Z will be introduced in Pakistan for the price of PKR 75,000; however, it is too early to lock it.

Moto Z Play is a smaller version of the original Moto Z. The phone has a display size of 5.5-inches, which is the same as the screen size of Moto Z. It comes with the 3GB RAM and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor. The device offers a decent camera hardware to its users as it comes with a 16MP back camera and a 5MP shooter on the front.

If we talk about the memory of Moto Z Play, it has a 32GB internal storage, which can be enhanced by adding a MicroSD card of up to 256GB. The phone has a powerful fingerprint scanner, which increases the security of this device.

The battery of Z Play is 3510 mAh, enough to survive 1 and half day with decent usage but it does not support the fast-charging feature that probably wouldn’t be appreciated by today’s customers. The price estimate for Moto Z Play in Pakistan is PKR 40,000 – 45,000.

The latest in the arsenal would be Moto M, which comes in a stylish body with a beautiful and shiny surface. This phone packs a display size of 5.5-inches, and it supports the High-Definition videos. The company has added a 4GB RAM and 32GB internal memory, and support for MicroSD card.

On the camera side, the Moto M features a 16MP primary shooter and an 8MP front shooter, which is greater than both the Moto Z and Moto Z Play. So, if you want a Motorola smartphone with a good-quality camera, then Moto M would be a nice choice.

A 3050 mAh battery powers the phone, and yes, it supports the fast-charging feature. There is also a Fingerprint scanner on this handset. In Pakistan, Moto M is likely to be introduced in the price range of PKR 30,000. Keeping in mind the modern features of this device, this price seems quite reasonable.

Moto phones will be available by two official partners of Lenovo, Greentech and Muller & Phipps (M&P). We are pretty hopeful, unlike i2 Pakistan, the ex-Lenovo distributor, these two will perform pretty good this time.

Lenovo gives up on marketing smartphones under its own name

BEIJING - Chinese PC giant Lenovo will no longer market phones under its own brand name; all future handsets will be 'Moto' phones. 

The move seems to be an admission that the company's 2014 acquisition of Motorola Mobility hasn't panned out as hoped. 

The company is also changing leadership of its smartphone business in China. Xudong Chen is moving from his role as co-president and SVP of the brand’s Mobile Business Group (MBG) in China and will be succeeded by Gina Qiao (乔健), formerly SVP of human resources. 

Despite her HR title, Qiao has previously headed up marketing in China and for many years was also chief strategy officer for the company; this background and insight form the ideal skill set to manage the mobile business, according to Yang Yuanqing, Lenovo chairman and CEO. 

The change at the helm of the smartphone arm is meant to enhance capacity in marketing within the mainland, explained Yang, who added that Lenovo's overseas smartphone performance has been better than China's. 

Sales of Moto-branded and Lenovo-branded mobile devices for the second fiscal quarter 2016 were US$2 billion, down 12 percent year-over-year, in yesterday’s results announcement. 

"Our mobile business had good quarter-to-quarter volume growth (20%) and margin improvement," Yang said, even if smartphone sales showed "only modest growth". PCs are still the core of Lenovo's business, accounting for 70% of total revenue per year. 

In addition, Lenovo introduced three new executives: Kirk Skaugen joins from Intel as executive vice president (EVP) and president of data center group (DCG); Laura Quatela joins from Alcatel-Lucent as chief legal officer and SVP; and Yong Rui joins from Microsoft as chief technology officer and SVP. 

These new executives are hired in the hope that the company will gradually transition from a hardware company into a "customer-oriented company focusing on devices with artificial intelligence and cloud services".

Kirk Skaugen – Executive Vice President and President of Data Center Group (DCG)

Kirk is a widely known and proven technology leader, having worked with Intel for more than 16 years leading both its Client Computing and Datacenter and Connected Systems Groups as senior vice president – the latter which grew from $6.1 billion to over $10 billion in three years. This role included responsibility for Intel's datacenter Xeon® silicon and solutions for cloud computing, high performance computing, communications infrastructure and Intel's Internet of Things (IoT) strategy and solutions. During his tenure, Kirk also led Intel’s PC business and served as general manager of the company’s Asia Pacific Solutions Group. Kirk holds the esteemed accolade of being the youngest elected corporate vice president and senior vice president in Intel’s history.  

Laura Quatela – Chief Legal Officer and Senior Vice President

Laura’s leadership track record includes roles at Alcatel-Lucent and Eastman Kodak, as well as co-founding a global consulting firm that helps clients leverage intellectual property assets. At Eastman Kodak, Laura served as president reporting to the CEO and was the company’s first-ever chief intellectual property officer, a role she continued when named general counsel of the company in 2011. At Alcatel-Lucent, Laura served as executive vice president of intellectual property focusing on monetizing the company’s patent portfolio.  Currently, Laura serves on the board of directors of Technicolor SA where she chairs the strategy committee.

Dr. Yong Rui – Chief Technology Officer and Senior Vice President

Dr. Rui joins Lenovo from a distinguished career with Microsoft where he led Microsoft Research Asia (MSRA) as deputy managing director, responsible for the key Artificial Intelligence research groups as well as the lab’s engineering groups. From 2010 to 2012, he served as general manager of Microsoft Asia-Pacific R&D (ARD) Group where he led a team in charge of China Innovation. Dr. Rui is a Fellow of IEEE, IAPR and SPIE, a Distinguished Scientist of ACM, and a Distinguished Lecturer of both ACM and IEEE. He is recognized as a leading expert in his research areas and holds 60 US and internationally issued patents.

Homeowners can also now use their PHAB2 Pro to remodel their homes by visualizing real home furnishings in their living rooms and kitchens. Home improvement company Lowe’s is one of the first partners to develop a Tango-enabled application, Lowe’s Vision.The app empowers customers by leveraging Tango technology to measure spaces and visualize how products like appliances and décor, or materials like countertops or backsplash tile will all look and fit together in a room. With Lowe’s Vision, customers will be able to control a new generation of augmented reality tools with a mere tap of the finger.

The Technology Behind Tango
Three core technologies bring Tango experiences to life: motion tracking, depth perception and area learning. Through motion tracking, the PHAB2 Pro’s “eye” sees its own location in 3D. Area learning tells the smartphone its location. Depth perception lets the device analyze the shape of the world around it by detecting surfaces and obstacles. And now for the first time ever,your smartphone can visualize and understandits surrounding objects and environment via sensors that capture more than 250,000 measurements a second.

Karachi:  Lenovo recently intensified its focus on the $87 billion data center technology market  by unveiling an expanded arsenal of IT solutions, including next-gen software defined storage, enterprise networking offerings and capabilities, the latest high-performance servers and an enhanced suite of hyperconverged appliances.  The broader portfolio drives Lenovo deeper into next-generation IT and strengthens the company’s ability to help customers transform their data centers by embracing emerging data consumption and delivery models such as cloud-based infrastructure, big data and analytics solutions.  The company will showcase many of these new solutions publicly for the first time at its annual Lenovo TechWorld event in San Francisco on June 9.

The new offerings are the latest demonstration of Lenovo’s ability to leverage partnerships with industry leaders, as well as leading-edge startup firms, to orchestrate delivery of best-of-breed solutions free of legacy technologies and investment burdens.  They give customers even greater flexibility to deploy the right solutions for their evolving IT environments and business scenarios without being locked in to rigid technology stacks.

“This dramatically expanded portfolio is a powerful demonstration of Lenovo’s commitment to creating purposeful data center innovation in a truly open ecosystem,” said Tom Shell, senior vice president, Data Center Product Group, Lenovo.  “With the latest advancements in server performance, software-defined storage, hyper-convergence and rejuvenated networking capabilities, all delivered seamlessly in a partner-centric model, Lenovo is striving to redefine the data center inside and out.”

New Software Defined Storage Solutions and Next-Generation SAN
Lenovo launched a new and innovative Software Defined Storage (SDS) appliance program, called StorSelect, collaborating with leading Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) to integrate their SDS software with Lenovo hardware in turnkey appliances.  The factory-integrated appliances with end-to-end Lenovo support enable simple and confident deployment of scalable storage solutions.  The first offerings in this program – the Lenovo Storage DX8200N and DX8200C– integrate SDS software from Nexenta Systems, Inc. and Cloudian, Inc., respectively, to deliver breakthrough return on investment for storage solutions.

New Networking OS and Expanded Offerings through Global Partnership with Juniper Networks:
Lenovo rejuvenated its enterprise networking line with expanded offerings and capabilities, enabling customers to deploy more comprehensive solutions from the core data center to the campus.  The company released its next-generation network operating system, Lenovo Cloud NOS, which offers new functionality that enhances resiliency, cloud-level scalability and programmability.  It will be available for customer download starting on June 17.

In addition, Lenovo disclosed new details of its global strategic partnership with Juniper Networks, which was announced earlier this year.  The two companies signed a reseller agreement under which Lenovo will offer Juniper Networks’ EX2300 and EX4550 Ethernet Switches, as well as the QFX10002-72Q data center spine aggregation switch.  Lenovo will sell these Juniper offerings directly as part of an integrated portfolio that also includes Lenovo’s own data center access products.  The Juniper offerings will be available from Lenovo beginning in the third quarter of 2016.

The companies also jointly published a new virtualized data center reference architecture, available now, that will allow customers to easily build solutions integrating their respective technologies to address virtually all data center networking needs.

Latest High-Performance Servers Establish New Industry Benchmarks
Lenovo refreshed its x3850 and x3950 X6 servers with new versions incorporating the latest Intel Xeon E7-4800 and E7-8800 v4 processors, which deliver up to 39% faster performance than the previous generation.   With memory support up to 12TB, these powerful offerings are designed for mission-critical environments, such as in-memory applications like SAP HANA or Hadoop, as well as large virtualization projects, big data and analytics workloads.

The Lenovo x3850 X6 and x3950 X6 offer fast performance, establishing 17 new industry performance benchmarks.   In addition, the new servers feature an innovative, modular “compute book” design, so they can be upgraded or maintained quickly and economically, enabling a highly agile and resilient data center infrastructure.  They will be available starting this month (June 2016).

Expanded Portfolio of HX Series Hyperconverged Appliances:
Lenovo announced a significantly expanded portfolio of HX Series hyperconverged appliances, based on Nutanix, Inc. software and built upon the company’s latest server technology, to cover a broader range of workloads and deployment cost requirements.
