PTCL posts double digital growth in operating, net profits

Islamabad: Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) has announced its financial results for the six months period ended June 30, 2019 at its Board of Directors’ meeting held in Islamabad on Wednesday.

Despite tough economic conditions, PTCL Group’s financial performance has shown marked improvement over comparative period. PTCL Group’s revenue for the half-year has grown year-on-year (YoY) by 9% to Rs66.3 billion as a result of an accelerated growth in the Ufone and Ubank revenues. Ufone revenue has increased double digits YoY, Ubank, a microfinance banking subsidiary of PTCL, has shown significant growth of 50% in its revenue over last year. PTCL Group’s operating profit and net profit for the half-year have improved by 20% and 10% respectively as a result of the revenue growth.

PTCL revenue of Rs. 35.8 billion for the half-year is marginally lower than last year (0.8%). PTCL’s flagship Fixed Broadband services posted revenue growth of 5%. PTCL continues its journey to upgrade top 100 exchanges under Network Transformation Project (NTP) in different parts of Pakistan. For the 76 exchanges fully transformed to date in 12 cities, YoY revenue growth is even higher at 13% and there is a 30% reduction in customer complaints.

Corporate & Wholesale business continued its growth momentum from a strong 2018 and has achieved double digits revenue growth. PTCL has entered into a strategic partnership with Zong for network expansion, through provision of PTCL’s VSAT services in remote and far-flung areas of Pakistan.

Wireless revenue for the period has declined on YoY basis due to strong competition by the cellular companies providing wireless data services. There is continued decline in domestic and international voice revenues due to continued conversion of subscribers to OTT, cellular services and illegal/grey traffic termination resulting in declining voice traffic volumes.

PTCL has posted a Net Profit after Tax, which is 3% higher than last year. Operating profit for the period remained under pressure compared to last year mainly due to increase in operating cost on account of significant hike in power tariffs and currency devaluation. However, non-operating income has increased due to higher income on investments as a result of increase in interest rates.

Islamabad: To achieve excellence in the organizational culture, a company needs to provide a healthy & engaging work environment that motivates and encourages its employees by providing a platform that shows its appreciation for their hard work.

A great example of this is the Champions Program, an in-house initiative taken by PTCL. The PTCL Champions Program was launched at the beginning of 2018 to acknowledge the hard work of those front-line employees, who have shown exceptional performance in their respective fields.

Each line manager receives a kit in the beginning of the year, which includes tokens of appreciation, for example thank you cards, PTCL badges and caps. These tokens are presented to departmental Champions by their line managers.

The pictures taken during the ceremony are posted on Workplace (Facebook@Work) to internally promote the Champions. The main aim of this program is to give recognition to these silent warriors in various departments.

These front-line workers always go the extra mile, not only serving the external customers, but also the internal stakeholders. A quarterly event is organized inviting all the departments to recognize PTCL Champions at a larger scale, within the regions and, at Headquarters.

WWF-Pakistan, PTCL plant mangroves in Sonmiani

WWF-Pakistan, PTCL plant mangroves in Sonmiani

WWF-Pakistan, PTCL plant mangroves in Sonmiani

KARACHI: WWF-Pakistan and Pakistan Telecommunica-tion Company Limited (PTCL) have completed their mangrove plantation drive under which 200,000 saplings of Ceriops tagal, Rhizophora mucronata and Avicennia marina were planted in Sonmiani, Lasbela District Balochistan, as part of the ‘Rung Do Pakistan’ campaign.

The local community of Sonmiani contributed to this drive by establishing mangroves nursery at the site and took active part in plantations. The initiative aims to not only help restoring the lost mangrove forest cover but will also build resilience of local communities to tackle climate change and other natural disasters, particularly soil erosion and coastal flooding in the area. The initiative will also mitigate the adverse impacts of climate change, regulate water cycles and increase green cover across the country.

The Rung Do Pakistan campaign is an initiative of WWF-Pakistan which aims to plant a total of 1.4 million trees across the country by 13 August 2019 through active participation of different stakeholders, local communities and passionate individuals. This large scale tree plantation is being conducted across six out of nine ecological zones of Pakistan, from mangroves along the coast to scrub forests in the plains of Sindh, Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and moist temperate forests in the northern parts of country. These plantations will be monitored through proper inventory, GIS based maps showing land use change and fixed point photography. WWF-Pakistan teams will regularly monitor progress so that the plantations have measurable and real impact.

It may be noted that between the years 2000 and 2010, Pakistan lost an average of approx. 43,000 hectares of forests (equivalent to half the size of Islamabad, capital city of Pakistan) every year. With only 2 percent forest cover remaining, the country’s deforestation rate is the highest in Asia, and is well below the recommended cover of 25 percent. Therefore, this campaign will help reducing carbon footprint and increase forest cover in country.

Mangroves are one of the primary features of coastal ecosystems and are widely spread across the coast of Pakistan. Considered as jewels of the coastline, they are first line of defence against cyclones, strong surges, tsunami and other natural calamities impacting the coastal areas. They are critically important because of their role in climate change mitigation and adaptation, community livelihoods, and food security.

The mangrove ecosystem provides nursing ground for different fish species as well as other fauna of the area. Presently, mangroves face multiple threats such as environmental degrade, ruthless cutting and dumping of sewage waste water. The reduced freshwater flow in the Indus Delta and other mangrove forest areas is leading to a decline in productivity and nourishment of their habitat leading to mortality of plants. WWF-Pakistan in collaboration with different organizations, is taking efforts to restore mangrove forests in country.
