Facebook removes support pages, groups, accounts of Pakistan Army on India’s appeal

Facebook removes support pages, groups, accounts of Pakistan Army on India’s appeal

Islamabad (APP): The Social media giant Facebook announced on Monday the groups, pages and accounts arising from Pakistan has been removed as they violated the policies of the company on coordinated inauthentic behaviour or spam.

The groups, accounts and pages were taken off in four separate takedowns, each among them were distinct and unconnected.

The Head of Cybersecurity Policy of Facebook Nathaniel Gleicher said in a statement on the website of the company that “Today we removed 103 Pages, Groups and accounts for engaging in coordinated inauthentic behaviour on Facebook and Instagram as part of a network that originated in Pakistan.”

Nathaniel Gleicher further added about the first network that “We removed 687 Facebook Pages and accounts for engaging in coordinated inauthentic behaviour.” He further said that it was connected to the individuals associated with an Indian National Congress (INC) IT Cell.

The Head of Cybersecurity Policy of Facebook Nathaniel Gleicher said that “They posted about local news and political events, including topics like the Indian government, the upcoming elections, the BJP and alleged misconduct of political opponents including the INC. Although the people behind this activity attempted to conceal their identities, our investigation found that this activity was linked to individuals associated with an Indian IT firm, Silver Touch.”

He further added that these pages and accounts were involved in behaviours which violated policies of Facebook. “This included using fake accounts or multiple accounts with the same names; impersonating someone else; posting links to malware; and posting massive amounts of content across a network of Groups and Pages in order to drive traffic to websites they are affiliated with in order to make money. Unlike the takedowns for coordinated inauthentic behaviour, this activity was not part of one coordinated operation.”

The Head of Cybersecurity Policy of Facebook Nathaniel Gleicher said in a statement that the people involved in this activity have concealed their identities, but Facebook investigation found that it was linked to employees of an institution in Pakistan that is ISPR.

Nathaniel Gleichner said that the employees were operating fan pages. Some 2.8 million accounts in total followed 24 pages, 57 accounts and 7 groups on Facebook adding that 15 accounts have been deleted from Instagram.

The Head of Cybersecurity Policy of Facebook Nathaniel Gleicher further added that the pages and groups that spread information about the politics and political leaders of Pakistan, Indian Government and about the Pakistani forces have been removed from Facebook and Instagram.

The Pakistani prime minister Imran Khan was praised by many other pages for promoting peace, or propagated unverified claims of shooting down of five Indian planes. “We are constantly working to detect and stop coordinated inauthentic behaviour because we don’t want our services to be used to manipulate people,” Gleichner said.

The spokesman for the subsidiary made no immediate comment when AFP contacted it.
Facebook also informed that it was removing 687 pages and accounts involved in similarly “inauthentic” behaviour that were connected to the opposition Congress party of India, which is contesting nationwide elections due to start on April 11. Congress reacted cautiously, with spokesperson Manish Tewari adding that the party “will need to verify the veracity of these reports”. A recent standoff between India and Pakistan over the disputed region of Kashmir saw a deluge of “fake news” hit social media, raising concerns over misinformation in the upcoming election in India.

India was facing criticism due to its defeat. The co commander of India accepted its defeat in Hybrid war and appraised ISPR. This was totally unacceptable for the Prime Minister if India Narendra Modi. India has always planned strategies against Pakistan and they have always gone against the Human Rights.

Facebook claimed itself about not having enough evidences against the accounts. But they removed the fan pages on Facebook claiming that they are linked with ISPR.

Every Pakistani is enthusiastic about its Army and loves them. During the Hybrid war, every Pakistani took part with even their broken cell phones to defeat India.

What does Facebook mean? Does this means that we cannot post on Facebook about our Army otherwise our accounts would be removed. This nation will find another way and others would remain.

Pak Army donates rupees 1 billion for dam fund - Army Chief presented the cheque to CJ

Pak Army donates rupees 1 billion for dam fund - Army Chief presented the cheque to CJ

Gen Bajwa donates Rs1bn for dam fund on military's behalf

Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa on Monday called on Chief Justice Saqib Nisar at the Supreme Court to present a cheque of Rs1,005.99 million as the army's donation to the Diamer-Basha and Mohmand Dams Fund set up by the apex court, according to a statement issued by the SC.

In July, the armed forces of Pakistan had announced they would contribute funds for the construction of the Diamer-Basha and Mohmand dams.

“The officers of army, navy and air force will contribute their two days’ pay, while soldiers [will be donating] one day’s pay to the announced fund for this national cause,” the military's spokesperson had said.

Last week, Prime Minister Imran Khan spoke to the nation in a brief televised address to appeal for donations to the dams fund set up by the Supreme Court.

"When Pakistan was made, every Pakistani had 5,600 cubic metres of water. Today, that stands at only 1,000 cubic metres."

"We have storage capacity of only 30 days for water when the safe period for water storage is 120 days. India has a capacity of 90 days. This is why making the dam for us is so important."

Warning of the rapid depletion in Pakistan's water resources, the premier said the country would face drought-like conditions by 2025 if immediate steps were not taken.

"I want to commend Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar [for starting the dams fund], but this was not his job," he had said. "This was the job of civilian leaders who knew this was going to swell into a crisis but did nothing to thwart it."

"I want to take over the fund-raising and want overseas Pakistanis to contribute like they used to do for the Shaukat Khanum Cancer Hospital, he had said.

The prime minister asked all overseas Pakistanis to make as many donations as they can to the dams fund in dollars to plug the country's depleting foreign exchange reserves as well as provide funding to start building dams, which he said he would personally oversee.

"I will safeguard your donations [against misuse]," he had promised.

Sarfraz and co chip in with Rs3.2m

Hours before the COAS handed over the cheque to the chief justice, Pakistan cricket team also made its contribution to the dam fund, according to captain Sarfraz Ahmed.

The national team, which is busy preparing for the upcoming Asia Cup 2018 these days, deposited Rs3.2 million.

"Each player contributed Rs200,000 to the cause," shared Sarfraz.

Army to abide by govt decision on Islamabad sit-in: ISPR

ISLAMABAD: Weighing in for the first time on the sit-in that has all but paralysed the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad for over two weeks, the military`s spokesperson said it would abide by the government`s decision on the matter.

InremarksreleasedtothemediaonWednesday night, Inter-Services Public Relations chief Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor said that while it would be preferable to address the situation through peaceful means, the military would abide by whatever decision the government took.

Saying that the civil and military leadershipswere on the same page when it came to the country`s security, he said that the army was dutybound to carry out the government`s instructions.

The military spokesperson`s remarks came after Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah advised the government to seek assistance from the armed forces to end the sit-in that was causing great inconvenience to the people of Rawalpindi and Islamabad.

`As many as two million people have been held hostage by these protesters. The government should use its constitutional powers to seek assistance from the armed forces of Pakistan [to end the sit-in],` Mr Shah said in a statement issued on Wednesday.

But despite two rounds of meetings, the gov-ernment could not make any breakthrough in the deadlock with religious parties who are staging a sit-in at the Faizabad Interchange.

Lengthy consultations held at Punjab House and the PM Of fice dominated most of the day, as leaders scrambled to find a way to end the ongoing sit-in. The meetings were attended by top government and local administration officials, as well as politicians.

Sources told Dawn that one of the many proposals that came under discussion included the option of restraining Zahid Hamid from performing his duties as law minister until the finalisation of the report of a committee led by Senator Raja Zaf arul Haq. However, there was no of ficial word on the outcome of these meetings.

Pak Army taken #UzairBaloch into military custody under Army Act 1923 -

The army took custody of Lyari gang war leader Uzair Baloch, who was arrested by the Rangers from the outskirts of Karachi last year.

In a tweet late Tuesday night, Director General of the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Major General Asif Ghafoor said that Uzair Baloch was taken into military custody under the Pakistan Army Act 1952 and Official Secret Act, 1923.

He further said that the high-profile criminal was taken into custody on charges of espionage (leakage of sensitive security information to foreign intelligence agencies).

The Lyari gang war leader, who has close ties to the Pakistan Peoples Party, had confessed his involvement in killings of rival group members, including Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) workers, supporters and police officials.

Baloch had further stated that several police officers were also working under his influence and a number of PPP leaders were also in his support.

Baloch, a former chief of the defunct Peoples Aman Committee (PAC) who was declared a ‘most-wanted criminal’ by the Sindh government, had been in the custody of the Abu Dhabi police for nearly three months before his arrest.

He was detained in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) based on Interpol’s red-warrant on December 29 2015 at the Dubai-Oman border.

Death reached to 75 as suicide bomber strikes inside #LalShahbazQalandar shrine in Sehwan

Death reached to 75 as suicide bomber strikes inside #LalShahbazQalandar shrine in Sehwan

HYDERABAD / KARACHI: At least 72 people have been killed and over 200 injured in a suicide bombing at the shrine of Sufi saint Lal Shahbaz Qalandar in Sindh’s Sehwan town on Thursday, officials confirmed.

Police confirmed it was a suicide attack. IG AD Khawaja revised an earlier death toll, saying that at least 72 people (43 men, 20 children and nine women) have been killed and many more injured.

The bomber struck inside the compound, where a large number of devotees were performing dhamal, devotional dance, sources said.

According to a police source, the bomber entered the shrine and blew himself up amid a large assembly of devotees, many of whom were there because Thursday is considered a sacred day to pray at the shrine.

Sehwan is 132 kilometres from Jamshoro and around 140 kilometres from Hyderabad.

“The incident took place outside the mazar (shrine) near Golden Gate,” Hyderabad Commissioner Kazi Shahid Parvez told The Express Tribune.

The bombing is reminiscent of a near-identical attack at Dargah Shah Noorani, in Khuzdar district of Balochistan, late last year. At least 45 people, including women and children, were killed in that attack.

IS-claimed bombing kills at least 52 at Khuzdar shrine

An emergency has been declared in hospitals across Dadu, Sehwan and Hyderabad.

“Ambulances from Hyderabad and Jamshoro have been sent to Sehwan. The town has a taluka hospital but it is not equipped with a trauma centre to deal with emergency cases,” in-charge Edhi Foundation Mairaj Ahmed told The Express Tribune.

Army chief General Qamar Bajwa also directed the medical teams to assist in relief and rescue operation.

Eyewitnesses described gory scenes in the shrine’s compound where human body parts were seen scattered. Some bodies were also seen lying on the floor.

‘Terrorist acts being executed from Afghanistan’

Meanwhile, the ISPR said the terrorist acts were being executed from sanctuaries based in Afghanistan.

“Recent terrorist acts are being executed on the directions from hostile powers and from sanctuaries in Afghanistan. We shall defend and respond,” DG ISPR Major General Asif Ghafoor said in a statement.

“Each drop of nation’s blood shall be avenged immediately.
No more restraint for anyone,” the army chief was quoted as saying.

Blood donation

Local authorities have appealed the people for blood donation. Many of the injured were shifted to the hospital in rickshaws, on foot and on carts before the ambulances arrived.

IS claims responsibility

Global terror group Islamic State claimed responsibility of the attack, the group’s affiliated news agency AMAQ reported.

Zardari to visit Sehwan

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari has left for Karachi from Dubai, sources told The Express Tribune. The former president will also pay a visit to the shrine.

The country has seen an upsurge in terrorist violence over the past few days, with bombers striking in Lahore, Peshawar, Mohmand Agency, and now in Sindh. Seven people were killed in two suicide attacks in Mohmand, while a bomber targeted a van carrying lower court judges in Peshawar.

Four bombers strike in 24 hours

Torkham border closed

Security forces have shut down the Torkham border between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

“Pakistan-Afghanistan border closed with immediate effect till further orders due to security reasons,” the ISPR said.

Pakistan Tests Ballistic Missile Capable of Carrying Multiple Nuclear Warheads the #Ababeel

Pakistan Tests Ballistic Missile Capable of Carrying Multiple Nuclear Warheads the #Ababeel

ISLAMABAD (VoA) Pakistan says it has successfully tested a surface-to-surface ballistic missile that is capable of carrying multiple nuclear warheads and can hit targets with precision as far as 2,200 kilometers.

Tuesday’s maiden flight test of the Ababeel missile was announced by military spokesman Major General Asif Ghafoor. He said it “has the capability to engage multiple targets with high precision, defeating the enemy’s hostile radars.”

Earlier this month, Pakistan successfully tested for the first time a submarine-launched, nuclear-capable cruise missile with a range of 450 kilometers.

Officials say the "Babur-3" missile provides Pakistan with a secure second strike capability.

Show of force
Tuesday’s Ababeel launch is Pakistan’s attempt to credibly demonstrate its technical ability to defeat “all ballistic missile defense systems” India is developing, says Syed Muhammed Ali, a senior research fellow at Islamabad’s Center for International Strategic Studies.

“This also indicates Pakistan’s scientific expertise to miniaturize its nuclear warheads,” he observed.

Western critics insist Pakistan has the fastest growing nuclear arsenal in the world, assertions Islamabad dismisses as “misleading.”

Pakistani officials cite close defense and nuclear cooperation between the United States and India for reinforcing its nuclear deterrence capabilities.

The Pakistani prime minister’s foreign policy advisor, Sartaj Aziz, speaking last week to VOA, again underscored the importance of maintaining “strategic stability" in South Asia.

“We have been emphasizing to the U.S. that if you start your defense cooperation and arms agreement in such a way that disturbs our strategic stability, then we will have no option but to respond,” said the de-facto Pakistani foreign minister.

The latest Pakistani missile tests come amid heightened tensions with neighboring India. Militaries of both countries until recent weeks had been engaged in deadly clashes across their disputed Kashmir border.

Dawn Report
What you need to know about Pakistan's Ababeel ballistic missile

The strategic forces of Pakistan, with the testing of the 2,200 kilometre range Ababeel ballistic missile, have achieved vital technological and deterrence capability with the introduction of a missile with multiple independently targetable re-entry vehicle (MIRV) compatibility.

The Ababeel's MIRV capability means it can carry multiple warheads, instead of a single payload. Hence, it is a single missile that provides the strategic capability of hitting multiple targets with a single launch. Such missiles greatly increase the potency of a country’s strategic nuclear arsenal.

Pakistan has become the seventh country in the world to now posses the technology, which was developed in the late '60s by the Americans and Russians.

India first tested a MIRV capable missile in 2012, with the successful launch of the Agni-V. India conducted its second successful test in 2013. The tests conducted by India had offset the strategic strike balance in South Asia.

In order to maintain that balance, it had become vital for the Pakistani strategic forces to develop MIRV capable missiles.

Pakistan’s strategic deterrence challenged
India’s quest for a ballistic missile defence (BMD) system also challenged the effectiveness of Pakistan’s strategic deterrence. To counter India’s BMD, which is still in development, Pakistan had to develop a viable solution given financial and resource constraints. Although the Ababeel has shorter range when compared with India’s Agni-V, it provides the needed deterrence.

Ballistic missiles equipped with MIRVs release their warheads typically in the post-boost phase, and reduces the effectiveness of a missile defence system, which relies on intercepting individual warheads. While an attacking missile can have multiple warheads, interceptors have a single warhead.

In both military and economic terms, the cost of maintaining an effective defence against MIRVs would significantly increase. Multiple interceptor missiles would be required for each incoming offensive missile. The defending side also has to factor in the probability of hit per interceptor, and whether the warhead is a decoy or not, hence reducing the effectiveness of such systems manifold.

How MIRV-capable ballistic missiles work
In a MIRV-capable ballistic missile, the main rocket motor pushes the warhead containing compartment into a free flight suborbital ballistic flight path. After the end of the boost phase, the compartment manoeuvres using onboard rocket motors and utilises an inertial guidance system for maintaining accuracy in flight.

With a ballistic trajectory achieved, the re-entry vehicles with the warheads onboard releases the munition on that trajectory and then manoeuvres to release the other munitions on other targets. The process is repeated till all munitions are released on the designated targets.

Accuracy is crucial and the onboard navigational systems ensure accurate delivery within the circular error of probability (CEP). The CEP is simply the radius of the circle that the warhead has a 50 per cent chance of falling into.

Details and technical specifications of the onboard systems and missiles are closely guarded national secrets, in order to limit the counter measures that can be taken against such missiles. It is not yet clear how many MIRVs will be carried by the Ababeel.

Two army personnel martyred in gun attack

Two army personnel martyred in gun attack

KARACHI: Two Pakistan Army personnel were gunned down Tuesday when unidentified gunmen opened fire on their vehicle in the congested, downtown Saddar area of Karachi, police and hospital officials said.

The attack took place near the Saddar Parking Plaza near Empress Market, one of the busiest markets in the metropolis.

According to reports, the attackers on motorcycles managed to escape after they opened fire on the vehicle of the security personnel, injuring both of them.

"Two army soldiers, Lance Naik Razzaq and sepoy Khadim embraced shahadat [martyrdom] in a terrorist attack on a military vehicle which was on routine duty near parking plaza Sadar Karachi," the military's media, the Inter-Services Public Relations, said in a statement.

The injured soldiers were rushed to the Jinnah Hospital, where doctors pronounced Lance Naik Abdul Razzaq dead on arrival.

Dr Seemi Jamali at the Jinnah Hospital said doctors were trying to save the life of the other person, identified as sepoy Khadim Hussain.

But later, hospital officials confirmed that the second soldier also succumbed to his wounds.

A large contingent of Pakistan Rangers and Sindh police personnel had reached the location soon after the incident, blocking the roads leading to the crime scene and cordoning off the area.

Karachi police chief Mushtaq Maher also reached the location.

"Two jawans belonging to a security agency were attacked in their vehicle. Our investigators are examining the crime scene," Karachi police chief Mushtaq Maher told reporters.

"Our forensic experts are looking for fingerprints, empty bullet shells, CCTV footage or any other clues, and we will inform you as soon as there are any updates," he said.

When asked, he said that police would try to "ascertain if there are links to any such earlier shooting incidents in the city".

According to initial reports from Counter-Terrorism Department officials, a 9mm pistol was used in the attack, with empty 9mm bullet shells found from the scene of the crime.

"9mm weapon was used in the attack. Both jawans were shot in the head," the chief of police's Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) Raja Umar Khattab told reporters.

Khattab said that the attackers approached the vehicle from the rear and attacked the personnel from the left side of the vehicle.

This is not the first time that security personnel have come under attack in Karachi.

In December last year, two Military Police personnel were gunned down by attackers on motorcycles in an ambush near Gul Plaza on the busy M A Jinnah Road, less than a kilometre from the scene of today's gun attack.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif condemned the attack on the security personnel in Karachi. He said that terrorists will not be allowed to destroy the peace of Karachi.

Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan also condemned the attack in a statement. Geo News

Gen Raheel shares his birthday with many world dignitaries

Gen Raheel shares his birthday with many world dignitaries

LAHORE: Pakistan Army Chief General Raheel Sharif, who turned 60 on Thursday (June 16), shares his birthday with a number of international presidents, prime ministers, monarchs, military generals and history-making economists.

Here follows a brief list of powerful global personalities born on June 16: Famous economist and philosopher Adam Smith (1723-1790), renowned American general and military governor of the Philippines Wesley Merritt (1836-1910), Austrian-Hungarian general Arthur Straubenburg (1857-1935), King of Sweden Gustaf V (1858-1950), Ninth Canadian Prime Minister Arthur Meighen (1874-1960), 60th Iranian Prime Minister Muhammad Mosaddegh (1882-1967), First President of Peru General Juan Alvarado (1910-1977), President of Greece General Phaedon Gizikis (1917-1999), President of Mexico Jose Portillo (1920-2004), President of Guatemala General Efrain Montt (born 1926), the 48th Bulgarian Prime Minister Simeon Gotha (born 1937), British General Thomas Carpenter (born 1938) and former Prime Minister of Greece George Papandreou (born 1952).

It is imperative to note that the people born on June 16 fall under the zodiac sign of Gemini. They enjoy the flexibility of being able to pursue their individual interests, while also being able to bestow their wealth of knowledge upon others.

This characteristic of being generous certainly holds 100 per cent true for General Raheel Sharif who had donated his two Defence Housing Authority land plots worth millions of rupees to the martyrs of the Pakistani Army last year.

General Raheel Sharif thus became the first Pakistan Army chief to have donated his property to the Shuhada Fund (Martyrs Fund), which was established for the welfare of families of those who sacrifice lives for country in war and anti-terrorism operations.

Moreover, people born on June 16 are often astute and self-assured. These individuals are usually sweet natured, however can be easily irritable. Always suspicious of others, they tend to keep people at a distance until they are able to ascertain their intentions. This built in self-defense mechanism may alienate them from others if they are not careful.

Since those people born on June 16 are comfortable in their own skin, they are usually quiet and reserved until they feel a need to voice their opinions. They think outside the box and often impress others with their intellectual capability.

Other people don't tend to notice them until they speak up. However, once they do, they leave a lasting impression. These people can quickly command the respect of others and are effective communicators and leaders.
