PTA blocks 1862 websites containing contents related to impersonation/fake accounts

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has processed a total of 1,862 URLs/websites containing contents related to impersonation/fake accounts. In accordance with the Section 37 of Prevention of Electronic Crime Act (PECA), the PTA is empowered to block / remove online content which is unlawful under the act including fake accounts.

The PTA has constituted a dedicated cell ‘Web Analysis Cell (WAC)’ to receive / process complaints requiring internet content regulation. A standard operating procedure (SOP) has been devised to execute the process in an effective manner.

In accordance with the SOP, complaints from individuals and stakeholders (government departments) requiring blocking / regulating web content of different categories including defamation / impersonation are received through an electronic portal, email and postal media.

At present, 30 federal and provincial government organisations / offices are assessing e-portal to register their complaints. For filing of complaints by general public, the PTA has notified a dedicated email address i.e.

On receipt of a complaint, the PTA issues necessary directions for blocking / removing the alleged content to telecom licensees. In case any content for fake account hosted on a secured platform like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, the relevant administration is requested to remove the content or block the fake account.

LG’s B2B Technology Wows Show Attendees with Wide Range of Innovative OLED to LED Solutions

Karachi / ORLANDO, UAE, July 16, 2019 — LG Electronics (LG) displayed its newest exciting business solutions in Orlando, Florida (USA) this week at InfoComm 2019. From Micro LED signage, Transparent OLED signage, Open Frame OLED displays to a diverse lineup of LED products, LG is bringing to the largest professional audiovisual trade show in North America a wide range of commercial display products that is sure to capture the imagination of show attendees.

Welcoming visitors to LG’s sprawling InfoComm booth is the immense LG OLED Falls exhibit that offers a unique, immersive installation of eye-popping Open Frame commercial OLED displays. Open Frame LG OLED displays enable a complete new approach for innovative and flexible digital signage designs. With no separate light source, the displays are extremely thin and lightweight, and flexible enough to be bent.

Making its world debut at InfoComm 2019 is LG’s one-of-a-kind Micro LED signage in all its colorful glory. Portending the future of digital signage, LG’s Micro LED technology relies on arrays of microscopic LEDs that form individual pixels that work independently to express image detail. At less than 50 micrometers, each LED is about the size of a speck of dust or approximately half the width of a human hair.

LG’s new LAPE series uses a specially designed flexible LED display module that supports true concave and convex curvature up to 1000R for virtually limitless design flexibility. The fine-pitch LAPE series delivers vivid images thanks to the Dynamic Contrast Algorithm, LG-exclusive technology for a wide range of color and deep contrast.

LG’s new 130-inch LED screen is designed to be easy to specify, order and install. Considered the ideal replacement for conference-room projectors, this LAAF series screen features embedded speakers and AV connections to meet a host of business needs. In addition to compatibility with leading partners such as Crestron, the screen will be supported by LG Signage365Care for real-time device monitoring and diagnostics.

Another crowd pleaser, LG’s Transparent OLED display is designed to offer a unique customer experience in specialized commercial applications, particularly retail and hospitality. The versatile 55-inch class display (model 55EW5F) delivers LG OLED’s superior picture quality, meaning customers will be able to view video on the screen and simultaneously see objects behind the screen.

New to LG’s wide-ranging large-format display portfolio for 2019 are advanced IPS In-cell Touch Interactive Digital Boards (IDBs). The 86-inch model in the LG TN3F series is designed to enhance the user experience in meeting rooms, classrooms and other collaborative spaces with easy and reliable touch performance. These IDBs feature intuitive In-cell Touch technology that employs an innovative direct bonding process to eliminate the gap between the LCD panel and protective glass. This combination delivers a faster response time for a realistic writing experience that is perfect for corporate conference rooms and university lecture halls.

“Advances in B2B technologies are opening up new opportunities for digital signage, exemplified by the diverse OLED and LED portfolio LG is featuring at InfoComm,” said Lee Choong-hwoan, head of the Information Display business unit of LG Electronics Business Solutions Company. “Our knowledge and expertise in both OLED and LED displays allows us the privilege of being the only company that can deliver this wide collection of signage solutions to our customers.”

Pakistan cyber security is not managed as a risk - A new survey by ACCA reveals

Pakistan cyber security is not managed as a risk -  A new survey by ACCA reveals

Not a day goes by without a breaking news story about data breaches or personal data theft from large organisations. Cyber crime is one of the biggest risks to businesses to date and globally its estimated costs will reach $6 trillion by 2021.

ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) has teamed up with Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand, Macquarie University and Optus to launch the report Cyber and the CFO. The global survey, which features views from 1500 ACCA and CA ANZ members, including their members in Pakistan, finds cyber security is not managed as a risk to businesses and is too often left to IT specialists to handle.

Highlights from the report show:
  • Almost 60 percent of CFOs and finance leaders rank cyber security as the most important or top five business risk
  • However, a third of respondents did not know whether their organisations had been the subject of a cyber attack. Few survey responses showed a recovery plan that included much beyond the hardware.
  • Over 20 percent of finance professionals admitted they had no involvement whatsoever in cyber security within their company.
  • And 10 percent of respondents did not know who in the business was responsible day-to-day for cyber security.
  • Larger businesses placed a higher priority on cyber risks (8 percent), but small businesses were marginally (5 percent) less concerned or aware of such security risks.

Cyber-risk is becoming ever more complex with the integrated nature of supply chains.  Only 19% of survey respondents said they regularly audited their supply chains.

It is noteworthy that more respondents in Pakistan than in any other country surveyed see cyber security as the most significant business risk, whereas overall its significance as a ‘top five’ business risk was lower than in the other major respondent countries.

Sajjeed Aslam, head of ACCA Pakistan says:
‘Finance professionals in Pakistan need to understand and play their full role in managing cyber risk in their organisations. Weakness in cyber security is a significant business risk across all organisations. The ACCA Qualification ensures that our students and members in the country are developed and assessed in digital and technology competency to be in a position to lead organisation into the digital future.’

ACCA’s head of business management, Clive Webb, says:
‘The increasing use of technology within businesses to create commercial advantage comes at a price and that price is cyber risk. The finance community cannot stand by and leave cyber security to others in the business to manage. It is very complex, but it is essential for finance leaders to familiarise themselves with the issue.’

The report highlights the changing nature of the cyber threat. It establishes the financial and operational risks that arise and in that regard the finance community needs to keep abreast of the evolving nature of the threat and ensure it is managed appropriately.

Technology an enabler of spiritual, social and commercial activities in Pakistan during the holy month of Ramadan

Technology an enabler of spiritual, social and commercial activities in Pakistan during the holy month of Ramadan

Technology an enabler of spiritual, social and commercial activities in Pakistan during the holy month of Ramadan

New online survey commissioned by Facebook shows majority agree technology help them follow Islamic practices during Ramadan

Islamabad, 30 May 2019: During the holy month of Ramadan and in the run up to the celebrations for Eid, people in Pakistan are adopting new technology to observe timeless traditions in modern ways.

Results of an online survey by Facebook show that 57% of respondents observing Ramadan, in Pakistan and who also own a mobile phone agree with the statement: “Mobile phones help me to follow Islamic laws and practices during Ramadan.” Almost three quarter of respondents (71%) agreed that mobiles helped them stay more closely in touch with friends and family during the holy month. Being connected is important, most respondents agree (68%), as it helps them know more about what is happening during Ramadan.

Facebook commissioned Kantar to conduct an online quantitative research study in Indonesia, Turkey, USA, UAE, Egypt, Pakistan, UK, France and Nigeria to understand how people observe Ramadan and how their daily routines change during the holy month. The research was conducted in April 2019 and included 954 respondents from Pakistan.

Majority of Pakistani respondents (99%) agreed that Ramadan is more important when compared to other occasions with 94% of Pakistani parents saying it is important to share traditions with their children. Eighty per cent of respondents agreed that they experience a stronger sense of community during Ramadan.

Umar Qamar, Founder of Pakistan based fashion house Export Leftovers (elo), agreed that the holy month of Ramadan was a significant one not just for the business but also for the community. “The holy month of Ramadan and Eid  is anxiously awaited by Muslims around the world and it is the same in Pakistan. During this auspicious month, Allah Almighty not only opens His doors of mercy and forgiveness upon all of us but also blesses us with countless opportunities.”

Along with the focus on spirituality, the survey shows that Ramadan also has an important social side -  61% of respondents agree that it is a time to spend quality time with family and friends. This is also reflected in the way that Pakistanis use social media during Ramadan. Eighty-five per cent of Pakistanis surveyed said they use the Facebook Family of Apps during Ramadan, with WhatsApp emerging as the most used service with 73% of respondents using it during Ramadan. Connecting with friends and family is one of the top reasons for accessing Facebook services during Ramadan, along with discovering spiritual content - from participating in prayer groups on WhatsApp to sharing religious quotes and sermons on Messenger.

“The key takeaway is that Ramadan is a time of great spiritual importance and community and that technology is increasingly integrated into rituals for the holy month. It also has an important social side and brands have an opportunity to forge meaningful connections with their audiences at this time through inspiring and relevant content,” said Ali Khurshid Ahmed, Client Partner-South Asia, Facebook.

The survey also shows that during Ramadan, people tend to focus on purchasing food, clothing and household items. Sixty-one per cent of respondents agree that Ramadan is a time for good food, 37% say it is the best time to find good deals and 37% agree that they like dressing up for the occasion. “The holy month of Ramadan signifies new beginnings and is the biggest occasion of the year to shop for everything from clothes to makeup and platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp have become key tools of marketing for us today.” said Mr Qamar.

A quarter of respondents said they spend the same or more time than usual researching what to buy during Ramadan. Of those who plan Ramadan purchases  in advance, thirty-four per cent of respondents said they use Facebook and Instagram for research on clothing and fashion and 30% of respondents who plan in advance said they use Facebook and Instagram to research household appliances.

Ramadan observers are open to brand communication through the Facebook Family of Apps. According to the survey, 40% or respondents prefer Facebook as a channel for communication with 33% being open to communication on WhatsApp and 15% being open to a brand approaching them on Instagram. “At elo, we have successfully used Facebook and WhatsApp to promote and sell our products and have witnessed a significant increase in business orders as we offer Ramadan sales through our Facebook page,” added Mr. Qamar.

ZapBuddy Finally Launches on Android: And that is great news for Privacy Conscious Users.

ZapBuddy Finally Launches on Android: And that is great news for Privacy Conscious Users.

ZapBuddy Finally Launches on Android: And that is great news for Privacy Conscious Users.

It has been almost a year since we covered the upcoming chat startup- zapbuddy. We liked it for a number of reasons mainly because there hasn’t been something new and good in the highly competitive world of chat apps. The world of Chat Apps has been a very limited one with many new entrants failing to make an impact and rise up to the big players. This startup felt one of the best challenger to the main stream apps, and that is a feat that very few apps have achieved so far.

We really liked it and were impressed by the hard work done by the team, given the fact they were working with jobs with the team divided between Melbourne and Islamabad. It was an extraordinary story and it was exciting to see the next garage success story happening before us. How a small team manages to work between different countries and jobs yet still strives to work on new features is truly amazing. Most exciting part was that unlike many apps with no adds, data capitalization was not a part of their business plan and that is good to know considering the impact of such strategies around the globe. The team also had patents focused around privacy and that shows the strategic direction of the company.

The app was amazing, but with one big caveat, there was no android version. Now finally the team has launched their android version and we can get to try the app on both platforms.

The flow in android takes very little getting used to and is neatly laid out. As the team pointed out, one of the most difficult tasks was to make it look simple and easy. As we mentioned earlier as well, the team has patented many new features with the focus on privacy. However, one of the best surprise has been the lock screen. Something we did not expect to catch on, but with whatsapp offering a similar feature, it feels like this is here to stay.

What we love the most- Privacy Control

The most simple yet extremely useful feature has been the privacy control for display image and location and frankly this is the feature we can see ourselves using the most. The display image can now be set for different users depending weather they are in your phone book or not and even if they are, you can also manually set a different image specifically for them. This is something we haven’t seen in any other app and in today’s world and given the complexity around privacy concerns specifically in our region, this can be a handy feature for users who may have their display images ending up seen by the users they may not want to show to.

Similar treatment has been done with the locations as well.

AR Location

The AR location is fun to begin with and we can locate places easily around. Whilst it is not beneficial for places we already know about, it can come in handy when navigating new places. This is a fun new feature which seems to be pretty basic at the moment but has a lot of development potential in our opinion.

Group Features

Group Chats are almost what we have accustomed ourselves to, however the party piece is the function which lets users have the option to join or decline BEFORE becoming a part of a group. This is a feature which is beneficial for users like us whose number is in a lot of blogging circles and get added into many new groups almost on daily basis and feel bad about leaving the group and not hurting the people who have added me.

Smart Notifications

Along the same set of problems is another feature that I personally can use a lot is the “exceptions”. Keeping all the groups quite and creating an exception for selected group like family and team is very useful instead of manually having to silence many number of groups Im already a part of and that can be a daunting exercise.

Finally, we get to try our hands on Audio and Video calling and it has left us impressed. The quality is at par with the likes of whatsapp and that is a big goal to achieve. We haven’t seen that many apps which have successfully delivered the clarity and for that we would give them thumbs up.

Even though the team has done a great job in successfully creating a very very good chat app that we are happy to see, there are a couple of things we feel still need to be done. For example ability to reply to a specific message is something we have dearly missed in this app. Furthermore, ability to recall the message is also something which needs to be there before making it a full fledged alternative to the established apps. The graphics still feel more refinement here and there but overall satisfactory.

In summary, the long awaited android version has proven to be worth the wait as we have loved the smooth interface, the calling quality, simplicity of adapting and getting used to the new features and new ideas that are honestly benefiting to every day usage.

Its been fun using the app and quite frankly can see ourselves using it in the long run. The issues we mentioned need to be addressed and hopefully more speedily now. The basics are good to begin with, but there is still work to be done to truly able to rise up to the established competition. For now, we are glad to be observing one of the best challenges we have seen so far to the likes of whatsapp, FB messenger and Line.
